HOMEMADE THANKSGIVING MAGIC

We’re talking Homemade Magic today.💖 Do come along, won’t you? MUSICA!

Thought I would talk about the magic of this season . . . We’re all going to be making some this next week (and month)!

We’re cooking up some magic at home and taking it to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving this year! I’m making my heavenly Pumpkin Cheesecake (you can make this gluten free by making one change in the recipe, use gluten-free ginger snaps for the crust, and voila!)I’m also making my Sweet Potato Casserole ⬆️ a wonderful recipe which I sometimes serve in mini pumpkins . . .

But this time I’m just baking it in a casserole dish so it’s easier for travel. (Like my apron? Quite the garment! No mistaking the holiday!)🎃

I’m also providing the cranberry sauce which I almost force them to let me do because I love this simple recipe so much, to me it sparkles ~ plus I’ll make extra for my must-have-for-the-holidays, Christmas Jam. Both recipes are below:I get to jump over it this year, because they are making the turkey!
And we’ll taste someone else’s “idea” of stuffing 😱 but we’ll be brave, it’s good for us, makes us better people. But Joe has gathered the ingredients to add some extra gravy to the general good.

I’m not making Rainbow Jell-O this year because we’ll be all adults (and one new baby!) but if you’re having kids at your table, this is a wonderful recipe for them to put in their forever memory banks. It’s kid food, and they know it and I believe, feel grateful for it. But trust me, big kids like it too!

This was our dinner last year, the leftovers looked almost as good as when we put the dinner on the table! We tried to make enough for every one to have leftovers to-go!

I thought you might like a few photos of Holidays-passed, of some of my decorated table ideas . . .

This was a casual dinner we had at the kitchen table using my old mix-and-match pottery collection, and the antique black-iron candlesticks I found somewhere along the way. (No marks on the bottom of these, I’m sorry to say, would love to tell you where they come from!)

Candlelight makes everything look better! More romantic, prettier colors, softer light, the food even tastes better in candlelight! And a little poem or a prayer written on a menu stand helps to set the tone. Because Thanksgiving is so wonderfully about gratitude and memory.

Cookbooks, wooden spoons, and recipe boxes (with mom and grandma’s handwriting on recipe cards) make evocative Thanksgiving table decorations. I love using stuff I have around the house. A table with lots of little framed photos works too. Makes for lots of happy conversation. Also, you can make placemats out of old photos (enlarge on copier), that’s fun too ~ you can even use them as place cards, “find your photo and that’s where you sit”. (I’ve forgotten to take pictures of my table settings in the past, I try not to let that happen anymore!)

Pile together a few of your favorite things, collections, or family memories, interesting things to look at that relate to you and yours . . . the little shoes, remember from my book? I wrote how I found them in the attic at Holly Oak, left behind by Agnes, my secret guardian angel. Now there she is, on our Thanksgiving table.

More found objects . . . Leaves and pinecones make perfect place cards!

Small low vases of flowers are good too, you can see over them! See the candlestick with the star bobeche? I found those bobeche years ago and LOVE them, I bring them out any time I need a starry night!🕯

I always use them for the holidays, but in the summer too, under the stars . . .

I looked for them for years to put in our web store, but never found them. Off and on, I’ve managed to get people to make them for us, but they’ve been very hard to get. See how you set the bobeche on top of the candle stick?⬆️

And then the candle slips through the hole and into the stick ~ 🕯

Voila! Anyway, I finally found a new manufacturer! And this time I had them made from lightweight acrylic, just like the ones I found so many years ago. In case you need some starry light on your holiday tables!🕯

Bobeche! Here’s how they look without the candles. And, something special, to celebrate this wonderful season . . .For YOU! YES, leave a comment at the end of this post, and we’ll have a drawing, and see who is going to be the winner of this pair of starry bobeche!

I love it when they play Little Women on TV on Thanksgiving. It’s such perfect background “music.” Reminds me of simpler days and the things that really matter. The smell of dinner cooking is enough to set the entire mood of the day. And isn’t it wonderful, it’s not about gifts?! Only the little ones that really count. Like home. And P.S. Something special for PLU (people like us) . . . LOOK what’s coming this Christmas

Because magic can come in very small packages. It doesn’t have to be fancy. All this decorating is nice, if you have the time, and are in the mood, but there are no rules. Just one little pumpkin on a porch or a kitchen table is lovely and festive and says it all. That, a roasted chicken, a baked apple, a little candle, and a prayer is all we need. And the day after Thanksgiving, while filled to overflowing with gratitude and contentment and pumpkin pie, and blessed by everything we have, feed your soul in nature on Green Friday. I fear we are teaching our children greed by celebrating consumerism the day after Thanksgiving. Instead, teach magic, take your spirit and your kids to the sky . . .

Because God made the dirt roads, the woods, and the critters and gave them to us has His gift. And it’s our job to take care of them for Him. Honor them for Him.

Quiet places with wind and bird sounds fill your heart with thanks and wash the stress away. (Would you like to read my Love Letter to Martha’s Vineyard? In your spare time!)

A wonderful gift from the sea, free! And we didn’t have to stand in line under klieg lights to get it!

The pause that refreshes. The sound of snowfall is good for you!The gift that keeps on giving. Other things to do besides hugging trees that cause magic: have a turkey-sandwich, pumpkin-pie picnic outside, or surprise the lady down the street and have your whole family go to her house and plant bulbs. (I’ll give you my address!) Bring someone who’s stuck inside OUT, and take them to nature. Adopt a new petty pet! 💖 Or,

Cuddle in front of a fire . . .

Dreaming of a better tomorrow? Let it show in everything you do.💞 We are so lucky!

Here’s a Thanksgiving Prayer bookmark, for you to print out, just click there. I’ve memorialized the childhood prayer Joe “sang” to me when we first met. (Suzy, Nosey, Inky, and so on, were his family’s pets!❤️)

And don’t forget to leave a comment for the starry bobeches. Blessings on you and yours darling friends! Have the MOST wonderful Thanksgiving.🎃

Really loved this post. What can be more happy making than gratitude? and getting outside in nature! I loved the photo of you hugging the tree. It looked like you really are loving that gorgeous woody creature that has been on this earth so long. Your photos of nature make me want to run outside and embrace our beautiful Maine coastal area. Nevertheless the wood stove is toasty and I have made stollen shortbreads for tea.

  3. Robin says:

Thank you for your perseverance in finding a manufacturer to create the starry bobeches. And thank you for posting all the magical pictures. A delightful blog post—as always! 4. Donna says:

The starry bobeche are really fun.

  8. Susan Holcombe says:

Hi Susan! I have to tell you about my new “pet” here on my son’s horse farm (near Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania). I have an apartment in part of the massive 5 story barn, circa 1776! When I was out walking in the field behind the house a couple of months ago I discovered 6 stuffed animals and a couple of rubber dog toys scattered around. So strange. They did not belong to my son’s dogs. I brought the stuffies and toys back to the yard close to the house. The next day they were scattered again in the field! I began spying and saw a wild Red Fox, come after dark and take the toys from the pile where I had put them and trotted off with them, one by one. Since then I go out every day and gather all the toys and bring them back, pile them up and then Foxy comes back and scatters them again at night. It has become our little game. And he has also stolen more toys from “who knows where”! and brings them to the field. There are no houses close by so he has to travel over “hill and dale” to bring them here. Some poor doggies somewhere are missing their toys for sure!. One day Foxy came during the afternoon, grabbed one of the stuffies and then ran around the yard, real fast, in big circles, just like a dog would. It was so cute. He sure is a riot and really brings me lots of joy. I sure love all critters, both wild and domestic. God is Good! I hope you have a supercalifragilistickexpealidocious Thanksgiving!! I am hoping to make your pumpkin cheese cake. Looks YUMMY!

  10. Shannon(Pennsylvania) says:

On Tuesday we will be leaving for WV to spend Thanksgiving with my darling mom, who just celebrated her 94th birthday a few days ago. She still lives in her own home, drives to the hairdresser and to church almost every week, and is as independent and spunky and cute as can be. We are so lucky and most richly blessed, indeed. Wednesday morning I’ll make your Christmas Coffee Cake for breakfast(she loves it❤️) and then I’ll make your cranberry sauce for dinner Thursday…because, of course, you can never have too many cranberries! Happy Thanksgiving to you and Joe. Hubby and I were just remembering..it was 56 years ago today that President Kennedy was assassinated. What a dark, unsettling, scary time that was. We believe our current situation is dark and unsettling and scary too, but we’ll take your advice..we’ll dream of a better tomorrow and let it show in everything we do. Thank you for this lovely post. Hugs❤️

  11. Happy Thanksgiving Susan! I always enjoy your blog and seeing your holiday celebrations. When I was young I wanted to skip over Thanksgiving and get to the main event Christmas. Now I love celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends. In the last few years, my husband and I have spent Thanksgiving with my son’s family and in-laws but I still make a small turkey and all the trimmings for leftovers. – Elaine

Magic truly does come in small packages! This Thanksgiving, we will be bringing our family’s traditional dishes (including PA Dutch potato filling) to my daughter and her husband at the hospital. They blessed us with a beautiful baby boy who was born at only 27 weeks with a birth weight of just 1 pound 5 ounces. As he is doing astonishingly well and as he is surrounded by an amazing NICU team, we truly have much to be thankful for.

Just so you know, I have a blanket wrapped around my legs, and a shawl around my shoulders right now, covering two sweaters. A pair of slippers warming in front of the heating vent, and some on my feet, which are whispering softly but getting more urgent by the moment, “Time to exchange places!” I wouldn’t change a thing, but you see what I mean!

  50. Mary Jane Hardy says:

I have been waiting for this post! I knew it would be wonderful, and it was. Thanksgiving , really all the Fall is my favorite time of the year. Things are so beautiful, then it is darker earlier and everything becomes so cozy. Life kind of slows down a bit for awhile. I can not agree more about Black Friday. I refuse to go anywhere on that day but home. To me it just totally destroys the whole meaning of Thanksgiving. Not to mention what Christmas is really all about, and it certainly isn’t getting shoved and pushed. I am so thankful I found you many years ago. We share so many of the same beliefs about family, home, people, and yes gardening too. When some of this modern day thinking gets me down, I always know where to come to get my spirit refilled. Thank you so much. I hope your Thanksgiving is very special one.

  60. Maureen from So. Cal says:

    Susan,

As usual, your post is full of magic and inspiration! It helps me to slow down and remember the niceties that make the holiday a little more special. Like how you include Agnes by making her present with her sweet shoes on the books. Such a beautiful sentiment. I sure needed this respite today. Your posts refresh my soul. And I can tell they do the same for others as well. May you be doubly blessed for all you do.

I have been seeing these bobeches in your posts for a very long time and have actually myself tried finding them online as I just love them. There are several other kinds, but not the stars. And those black antique candle holders of the ladies holding the candles. I covet them every time I see them! 🙂

I will be making the cranberries and then the jam. That sounds so delicious. Trader Joe’s has a cranberry orange relish that’s yummy, so I am certain your jam will be amazing, especially on a scone or buttered bread (or toast) with a cuppa!

I was glad to see Jack there at the end of this. I was thinking, ‘where’s Jack’? My husband is allergic to cats so I love them vicariously through you and other people with kitties 🙂

Wishing you, Joe and Jack a happy and blessed Thanksgiving (and Green Friday).

    Maureen

  62. Colleen says:

Susan..I don’t know what it is about your writings, but it always touches my heart so much. I guess it makes me think about days gone by that will never come back again and also how quickly life is passing me by. I always smile when you say “come and get your happiness”, as I always remember little Shirley Temple singing that song. I also know what you mean about listening to the snow falling. I have done that so many time throughout my life and always have wondered if anyone else has ever done that. I have always thought the the U.S. folks sure know how to celebrate their Thanksgivings (far more interesting than us Canadians) . Your Thanksgivings (to me ) are more like our Christmas’s. Anyways..just wanted to tell you how much joy you bring me when your newsletter arrives in my inbox. ❤️

  63. Cathy Wiegman says:

Happy Thanksgiving Susan, Thank you for sharing Martha’s Vineyard Love Letter. I grew up in the Caribbean, after I got married with a USA Army man ( 15 years this December) and travel around the states. I fell in love with the seasons, the smell of pine trees and mountains. We moved this year to Utah from California and we are loving every moment. We can see the Wasatch mountains from our house. Closer to nature, closer to God.

  72. Janice Henkel says:

Re your Rainbow Jello. It could be a dessert. especially after eating a big turkey dinner. It would be nice & light. The sour cream would just taste like regular cream like when I put sour cream & jam on my crumpet, it tastes sweet.

    • sbranch says:

The sour cream keeps it from being too sweet . . . but anything Jell-O can go both ways.😀 It’s so nice to have something cold and colorful in an all-hot and brown dinner!

  73. Nettie says:

What a timely post. I’m relaxing after having hosted my sister an a friend for a lovely lunch and a time to make cranberry relish together. Everyone brings their own ingredients and jars and we help each other make enough to then share with other friends. We decorate the glass jelly jars and tie them with twine. It was a fun festive fall afternoon now I have my jammies on!!
    Love all things Susan Branch

resonate with me. This despite the fact that I live way far from you in
Florida. I do not understand, but from the time I “found” Gladys Tabor I have
loved your “neck of the woods”, and discovering you has been a blessing in my life. I treasure my “old” furniture, my blue and white dishes, and “dutch girl” quilt made from remnants of tiny dresses all lovingly stitched for me by my dear grandmother.
Love and all best wishes to you and Joe for all the wonderful pleasures that this season brings.

Love the sound of your quilt! I know how you feel, I was homesick for New England before I ever moved here! xoxo

This post was the calm I needed this evening. I love that you quoted Van Morrison too! 😀 Thanksgiving in Canada is long past but I understand we are thankful everyday. Black Friday is something I could never understand. You have inspired me to so something outdoors with my kids. I LOVE Little Women!! When I went to see my mother this summer in VA, she gave me the set I have been wanting since I was 13. I will cherish these porcelain dolls forever. I so wish I could post pictures for you…they are just beautiful.

I hope and pray you have a lovely Thanksgiving. 🙂

It’s lovely to see your Autumn colours. I become so engrossed in all things cosy and warm, I need to look out the window to remember it’s Spring here! Just want you to know I love to read every post you send us. Still inspires and grounds me ‘though far away on the other side of the world. Thank you Susan. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Joe and your friends.

Your writings are truly a visit from a dear friend with whom we have so much in common. I wanted another month of October and now as November is drawing down I’d like seconds of her too…as I sit here with our candles lit and a warm cup of apple cider mixed with brewed ginger lemon tea and a cinnamon stick I felt a warm tear trickle down my cheek as I drank in your pictures and stories.
Can we get a package of you to savor and share?
You are so kind and thoughtful!
