I make this delcious cake and serve it with warmed homemade applesauce! Truly a family favourite. A great comfort food at this time of year.

I am going to make this for Thanksgiving – sounds yummy & so pretty. Thanks for sharing.

  3. So glad you published this. After you mentioned the gingerbread and lemon sauce in your blog, I tried to find someone with a copy of your 2011 calendar, but had no luck. That is a recipe my mother made when we were children – 60 years ago, and no one in my family has the recipe. I’ve search for years for the old-fashioned version. Thanks! Love your blog, and I only read 3 blogs. Happy Autumn!

Susan – my son purchased a t-shirt that says only VINEYARD on it in green. The shirt is gray. He pur based it in Oak Bluffs in a store that sold sports memorabilia. Is there any chane you might know how I might find where I can get one? I know you are so very busy, however, I can’t tell you how appreciative I would be. Thank you!

    Wishing you a blessed Thanksgivimg,
    Shirley Jeffrey

What is 1 cup of Guinness stout ? Chocolate? or Coffee? Sorry just never heard of it and I do tons of cooking. Love the tree bunt pan. Want to make this.

    • sbranch says:

It’s like beer. Irish beer with a specific tangy flavor. If you make this, I should add, the tree pan is a ten cup mold, don’t use more than 10 cups batter.

Merry Christmas to you and Joe and may your 2016 BE VERY BLESSED . The best to you 4 thats the fur balls too . LOVE TO YOU ALL Cheyenne XXX from Henderson Nevada only til before summer want a milder temp XXX

What would you recommend in place of the Guinness Stout?
Love your work (and play)!!! Thank you!!!!!!

    • sbranch says:

I can’t recommend anything actually, may I ask why you wouldn’t want to use it? If it’s the alcohol content, that cooks off, and there is nothing left of it except flavor. The beer makes it chewy and sticky and wonderful. It’s kind of a big ingredient. You could probably use regular beer… but I wouldn’t. Sorry, I’m sure this doesn’t help one bit!

  9. Discovered you and this blog over a year ago when a dear friend gave me “A Fine Romance” for my birthday. My first reaction was, “Uh oh, this is a little too precious for me,” but, oh! Was I ever wrong! Before I was half way through, I had fallen in love with Susan Branch, and I read it through in one sitting. Then I immediately read it again. Then I found the blog and got nothing done for a week. Like so many of your followers, I feel a kinship with you. I, too, have a black and white cat, Mini, and I have loved and read Gladys Tabor since the mid-sixties. I’m a lover of Fred and Ginger, Myrna Loy, Greer Garson, et al., Austen, Potter and Trollope, and all things English and have been fortunate enough to make several trips to England. I’m also a displaced native Californian. But unlike many of your fans, I’m not a collector (unless you count cats), nor do I have a creative streak, and I’m just an OK cook. But I love the world you have created and thank you for sharing. Now my question regarding the tree gingerbread cake: after greasing with melted Crisco, do you flour the tree-mold?

    • sbranch says:

Oh my goodness, so much in common! … and no, I don’t flour the tree mold. Just the Crisco is enough. And be sure to just use 10 cups of batter, I think the recipe might make a bit more, but that’s because you can use it with other molds. Nice to meet you Marcia!
