Zee Rabbit Hole

MUSICA 🎵  You know how when you are going about your daily life, perhaps living in a rabbit hole, but perfectly fine with it ~ and you think that although you are extremely happy doing your little thing, probably if you WritingDesktold someone about it you would be forced to watch their eyes slowly roll back in their heads as they prepared to die from boredom? Well, that’s why I haven’t written. You deserve better. But then I miss you, so here I am, ready to bore you to pieces ANYWAY. Because I’m sure what most of you would like to hear about is Christmas, food and decorating, snow and all the wonderful things of the season. And don’t get me wrong, in regards to these things, my heart is in the right place ~ and although snow is still a distant memory, our tree is pure heaven . . .

hearts

Oh Christmas Tree

. . . I just love it. As I run back and forth through the house, from the tea kettle to my studio, I pass right by it. There it is, almost perfect this year, smelling piney, twinkling and art girlbringing cheer to the person rushing past it to get back to what makes her so very boring and so very happy. BTW, note little red button on the floor under the tree? One of the best inventions of the 20th century. You plug your Christmas lights into it, plug it into the wall, and step on the button to turn the tree on and off. Perfect when you come home from a party late at night and want nothing to do with crawling around on the floor to unplug the lights. Step and boom, and off to bed. So satisfying. We’ve had ours for years ~ love it every year . . . I found one HERE in case you want one too.

holly jolly Christmas

Jaime

And here’s that party we came home late from. See? I’m not THAT boring. I even made a Gingerbread Tree Cake yesterday to take to this party last night. I took this photo of our hostess Jaime and her beautiful table . . . it was a singing bird susan branch artwonderful dinner with all our best friends and the most amazing food: Jaime made Julia Child’s Coquilles St. Jacques from The Art of French Cooking, with stuffed tomatoes, a perfect little salad and a side of some sort of grain I think might have been quinoa (I didn’t have my glasses on!). Elegant, light and delicious. We had the gingerbread cake with wine A toast, Happy Anniversarysoaked pears and whipped cream for dessert. While we ate, we went around the table of old friends bathed in candlelight and each person told a favorite Christmas or Hanukkah memory, and all we did is toast each other and laugh.fun is good

Shelly's Kelly doll

trees

Speaking of memories: Yesterday I got a Christmas box from my youngest sister Shelly. I opened it this morning and inside was a doll I made for her in 1973 when she was around 11. What a surprise! She was letting it come for a visit with me! I’d forgotten I even made it. Shelly called it her “Kelly Doll” and I laughed to read what she wrote in the letter that came with it, “Sorry Kelly is so dirty but she hasn’t had a bath in 43 years.”

memories

Raggedy Ann

I had to turn her over and examine her, loving her striped socks and rick-rack apron . . . and then I remembered…

Christmas 1973

That I’d embroidered on her back, and there it was … a little worse for wear, but still readable. I was happy to give this to her in the first place, but even happier that I did it now! I made a doll that is now 43 years old. How can that BE?counttimebyhearthrobs

embroidered heart

Kelly came from a really easy-to-make Raggedy Ann McCalls pattern. All Raggedy Ann dolls have a heart on their chests because of the candy heart the author gave her in his original stories. So I embroidered a heart on Shelly’s doll.

Susan Branch doll

Shelly’s doll started me on a doll-making jag, you could seemingly do anything with this pattern, just change the clothes, the face, the hair color and you could even match the child you were giving it to . . . my ex mother-in-law brought me a tiny dress creativityfrom Thailand that I couldn’t get even get a toe into, it was so small. But the fabric was beautiful and I wanted to use it for something so I took it apart and made my Asian Annie, complete with nail polish and black satin pants, and yes, a heart on her chest too. I still have her. I also made another doll wearing a 1950s outfit, with a poodle skirt and blonde hair, but she went off to the child of one of my friends and ended up being loved to shreds.childhoodIMG_4368

This was also in the box Shelly sent . . . a quilt I made for my mom the same year I made Shell’s doll.

embroidery stitches

There was no rhyme nor reason to the design for this quilt . . . I was self taught, which meant I didn’t know what I was doing and just hooked the pieces together using lots of different embroidery stitches.needle

my first quilt

Shelly sent me the quilt because a couple of weeks ago my mom did some downsizing and moved into a place where she would have more care. We wanted the move to be easy for her, and what could have been a sad event turned out to be a time flies arttrue blessing because she was getting a little bit cut off from people where she used to live. Now all she has to do is walk out her door, and voila, there are lectures, and exercise classes, and delicious meals, and a great big Christmas tree, and carolers singing songs she knows all the words to and she is much happier, and so are we, her children. She has gone to exercise class every day since she moved in! SO happy! But this quilt, that has been on the back of her sofa for the last 42 years, has returned to me, for better or for worse. I am pleased to have it, but will miss seeing it in her old house.Time ...

Christmas 2015

So this morning has been a lovely little walk down memory lane. Just what I love at Christmas time.

gum dropsDespite this, visions of sugar plums are really not what dances through my head, and although I DO have my kerchief and Joe DOES have his cap, we have NOT settled down to a long winter’s nap! No,I LEAP from my bed, my feet all a’clatter, before any creatures begin stirring and say, “What’s a’matter?” I speak not a word but RUN to my Martha's Vineyard Isle of Dreamspaintbrush and pen and then fall down, down, down into the rabbit hole again (mixing my metaphors and fairy tales the entire way) where I live, deeply connected and madly in love, to be honest, with the making, writing, and painting of my new book. It wins for my most favorite project ever (but I probably say that with all of them). Some days I jump up and say YESsss! Out loud, because I remembered to include the right quote, or wisp of girlfriend conversation that I know you probably had with your own girlfriends, happy because the watercolor of the girl Cookie manbeing blown down the road by the wind actually looks like a girl being blown down the road by the wind! I can’t wait to show you. And because I am so into it is why my life looks boring and repetitive like Groundhog Day to the outside observer because this is all I really do and is why I haven’t written to say hi. I don’t think you will be mad at me anymore when you see this book, I really don’t. I still take time outs to read Christmas cards, bake a cake, to open a box and fall all over an old doll or quilt, but then, I’m done. Back to studio. On the phone, talking to mom, talking to dad, while painting. Drinking tea and stopping sometimes to play with Jack or hug Girl or go for a walk with Joe.

Joe and me on the walk

Here we are. Gumby people out on the road in long afternoon shadows. We still haven’t had any snow. I prayed for a long fall and those prayers were answered but nothing really matters because my heart is in the book, even when out here, in my favorite place on earth. I hope to have it to the printer by the end of January. And thenKiss boring goodbye Because next year? We sail to England! And in case you haven’t heard, I will be blogging the trip, so we’re rms_queen_mary_vintage_passenger_ship_sticker-p217215363289977330en7l1_216bringing you all with us! But before we sail away, we’ll be visiting 20 American cities, doing 20 book signings. Click on EVENTS at the top of this page ~ next week, Kellee will start putting up a few of our confirmed dates so far. I’ll just say now: Yes Cedar Rapids, Iowa,✔️ and Yes, Cincinnati Ohio ✔️, and Yes, St. Charles, MO.✔️ We are coming! Next May! Hope to see some of you there! Don’t worry, that’s not the whole tour. Our 30th Anniversary 2016 Book Tour has just begun

I’m still watching progress of The Fairy Tale Girl, in the My favorite fairyGratitudeonly way I can, by the ratings on Amazon, and I’m thrilled to tell you that we have a 5.0 rating with 113 reviews so far for Fairy Tale Girl!!! Can you believe it?  And A Fine Romance? It’s got 473 reviews and a rating of 4.9, which I could not ask for more! These little books survive almost completely because of your word of mouth ~ makes me so happy.♥ Thank you! You are the best!

Christmas tree

Here we are, a winter with no snow (so far), and in a few days it will be time for the shortest day of the year, and then, the days begin to grow longer and Downton will start and life will be complete. Can. Not. Wait.

painting

So back I go to paint some more, this was a time out for my little message of love to you all. 😘 I hope you are having a boring holiday season too. Makes life so nice.  No hectiosity to deal with, right? All is calm, all is bright. Oops, I almost forgot, you probably would like a picture of the children right?

on guard!

Always on guard. Never know when or where the attack might come from. Siempre Listo. Motto #1

oh who cares

It gets very tiring standing guard all the time. Trust but verify is their #2 motto.

Jack

Time out to apply for the job of cat model.

Jackie

Am I cute enough? Is my tummy soft enough looking? Do I light your fire?  Oh yeah, I know I do.😻

  1. Merry Christmas Susan and Joe! Merry Christmas Kitties! I feel as though it is time to jump down the rabbit hole! So much to do…..I am late! The date however will come ready or not!
It really has been a Christmas of sweet memories. My mom (92 years young) and I flew to Ohio to help put up my Mom and Dad’s wonderful Christmas Village (Kobieville) under my son’s Christmas tree for the grands. It has been in storage for 15 years and my Dad has been gone for 17 years. So it was full of tender memories. And now all the carefully painted houses and the Little Engine That Could are all living a new life. Christmas is Magic isn’t it!
And your Raggedy Ann doll is beginning her new life. Back with her the sweet lady who created her with so much love! Much love to you family Sue and Merry, Merry Christmas!
    Chris
    Also unseasonably warm here!!

  2. Beth Barnat says:

    Dear Susan,
I just read, with delight, your newsletter. What treasures – those gifts from long ago.
I want to know if you and Joe have watched “Miss Potter,” the movie about Beatrix Potter’s life (Renee Zellwegger)?
I just watched it again last night and it’s so delightful and reminds me of you and your wonderful artwork and stories.
The merriest of Christmases to you and Joe.
    May God bless you.

P.S. I love the quote, “What one loves in childhood stays in the heart forever.” This is so true. I loved the book “Heidi” and read it 10 times. I still have that same book today. Heidi is my greatest heroine of all of bookdom. She never let anyone stop her from loving them, beginning with her seemingly grouchy grandfather, whose heart she won over in no time. In her effort to help her friend, Clara, she was tireless, persevering and cheerful – until it bore fruit and Clara walked in the clean, fresh mountain air. And she didn’t forget Grandmother, who had no teeth, when she was taken to Frankfurt by her mean aunt. She saved the soft rolls for her Grandmother, because they would be so easy for her to eat.

    • sbranch says:

I adore Miss Potter. I have it, and watch it every time I wish to be delighted. When all else fails and the world is going to hell in a handbag, I watch Miss Potter and feel infinitely better. And I love that your hero is Heidi! And for all the best reasons. xoxo

      • Beth Barnat says:

        Thanks for responding, Susan!

      • Laurie Nico's mom says:

I read your blog, Susan, to feel infinitely better! Merry Christmas to you and Joe and your adorable kitties! Please give them all a good firm hug from me. All the best for the coming year as well.
        Laurie
        =:3

    • Beth, I also still have my original Heidi book! That story has stayed with me for a lifetime!

  3. Rose Utterback says:

Love your blogs. You are so clever. Always fun to see the kitties. Merry Christmas to you and Joe!

  4. Ann Jane Koerber says:

In January, it will be two years that I started following your blog……I had found a small book, Christmas Joy, in an antique store and …… so it began, my wonderful adventure into the life of Susan Branch! In these two years, I have accumulated a few more of your books, started collecting and reading Gladys Taber books, been to three of your book-signings, one of which, I hosted, and I can’t thank you enough for the enjoyment all of it has given me. At a dinner Friday night with a very good friend, she handed me a gift bag of little gifts……..one of which was your “Love” book. She said that the look on my face when I saw it, caught her by surprise. I was like a little girl, getting something that I totally unexpected, tears of surprise, and couldn’t thank her enough. See……I said this once before, you, my dear girlfriend, Susan Branch, are the gift that keeps on giving. Hope to see you again on tour. Merry Christmas to you, Joe and those beautiful kitties. xoxo

  5. SusanA says:

I’m glad your mom likes her new home. My mom lived with me and my husband for a short time before we found just the right new home for her. While she was here, she seemed withdrawn and not interested in much, not even a serious game of Scrabble, which she used to often play with me while I was growing up. But now, she, too, goes to exercise class, and she plays cards and brain-teaser games and listens to carolers and goes to early-bird movie night. She’s made friends. And she’s getting the care she needs. Which makes us all very happy.

I’m so glad to hear you’re coming to Cincinnati! I live here and can’t wait to come to your book signing and meet you! How does that work, if I’ve already bought your new books? Can I still bring them to have you sign them–even if I got them from your store and not the bookstore where you’ll be visiting?

    • sbranch says:

Isn’t that wonderful about your mom! As for the bookstore, as far as I’m concerned you can bring anything, but every once in a while I run into a store that has rules. Personally, I would do the “I didn’t know” thing, and do what you want. 🙂

  6. Glenda says:

I know The Fairy Tale Girl is under our tree so be awaiting what I know will be another fab review!

  7. Wendy Louise says:

  8. Anne says:

You just keep on doing your thing Susan….it sure makes all us girls happy:-) I recently was having a bad day so I came home, got all of my SB books out, got comfy and wallowed for hours and voila ! All better :-). xoxoxo

P.s. Your tree is GAWgeous! So pretty and sparkly. Hugs and blessings to you, Joe and the kitties 🙂

  9. jane says:

Merry Christmas to you , Joe and the kitties! Thank you for a wonderful year of blogs to read and enjoy. Looking forward to your new book and blogs through out 2016.

  10. Katherine M. in Austin says:

So nice to have a post before Christmas! I think your rabbit hole is a treat – thanks for sharing it. I skipped the tea, since it was nearly 8 PM when I found the post, but I am toasting you with eggnog! Unleaded, for right now! Your dinner party, Christmas tree, and happy memories bring me smiles. Not to mention the kitties! Does Jack let you rub that wonderful soft tummy?

As for your tour, I asked BookPeople if they might consider adding you to their calendar and provided contact info, then forwarded everything to Kellee. Here’s hoping!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Joe and the kitties.

    • sbranch says:

He lets me rub his tummy, but sometimes he makes me beg. Which I will do any day. His new thing is to come to me around 10 in the morning and want to be held. Like a baby, and have his nose rubbed. Yay! Book People! Thank you sooo much!

  11. The strangest thing happened with my rag dolls. Made by my mother and given to me on my 4th birthday, I have always had them with me. They are like Raggedy Ann and Andy but for the brown hair and lilac colored clothes (?). I’ve washed them three or four times and they always came out of the wash in perfect shape. Except this time, Susan, they had grey hair! How can brown hair to turn grey hair? It was un-nerving! Love your little Asian girl rag doll. Rag dolls are the best.
    Ginene

  12. Brenda Caldwell says:

I love the beautiful quilt you made for your Mom! I’m so glad she likes her new home. Give her a hug for me…

  13. Linda C. says:

I always enjoy reading about what you, Susan, and all your other fans are doing. It feels like we’re the Susan Branch Sisterhood. Hubby and I just returned to our hotel room in New Orleans after singing Christmas carols by candlelight in Jackson Square with hundreds of other people. IT WAS MAGICAL! It’s always fun to go somewhere new for Christmas, but I can’t believe how much I miss my tree and all my decorations. We’ve been away from home three weeks and my beloved California is screaming at me to get home. I guess it’s true – there’s no place like home. Merry Christmas to you and all your other readers, and God bless us everyone.

    • sbranch says:

Singing is magical, especially along with hundreds, especially on a trip, how fun. I love the Susan Branch Sisterhood! No place like home is right!

  14. Sharrie says:

Boring is never “boring” when you tell it with sparkle and look for the magic in the tale. I think the simple, everyday things can be boring or joyful, depending on how you look at it. So thank you for sharing your tale with such joy.

Are you coming to Texas? The girlfriends in Texas need to send their wishes to see you in Texas to the Book People book store in Austin. I do not live near Austin, but I would make the trip. Besides, if you live in Texas, you’re used to driving long distances!

  15. Jo-Anne says:

Thanks for the wonderful blog. Christmas Blessings to you and your family and friends.

  16. linda Matera says:

    Hi Susan—Are you still awake??? It’s almost 10pm,and i’m watching a Hallmark movie.Every night–maybe 2 movies in a day.
    Yep—Christmas never gets boring.
I loved the quilt—–the Log Cabin is one of my favorites. The colors are lovely.I have been making quilts for over 30 yrs.
It would be amazing to meet you.I will check back to see if you will be in CT.
Of course,i feel as if i already know you, from your wonderful books

No snow here either. It’s way too warm.
Merry Christmas Fairy Tale Girl….Your girlfriend from CT

    • sbranch says:

No, unless it’s a party emergency, or Downton runs long, I’m not awake at 10 pm. I’ll be at RJ Julia’s in Connecticut, just around the first of May . . . hope to see you there!

  17. Michele M. says:

So glad to hear your mother’s transition into her new home was positive! Sometimes that can not go well. Sounds like she will have new friends and new experiences! Ah yes snowless winter in New England. It only gives me more reason to slow down and stay home to be creative. I also look forward to hunkering down for the winter. Especially now in our first house. So many new experiences and traditions! 🎄🎅🏻

  18. Jeannie says:

Oh Susan! What fun happy things you sewed! And how creative to change the pattern around! What a beautiful crazy quilt also! It was your destiny to become such a great artist and writer, and making so many people happy, love love love you!!!

Merry Christmas to you, Joe and the kitties

    Jeannie

  19. Tina says:

    I love the Asian doll!!!

    • sbranch says:

Me too. At one time I thought I would just make one from every country! I didn’t get too far with that idea!

  20. Cyndi in NC says:

Boring is one thing I could never think of you. You are so creative and you always take us traveling with you! You give us great recipes and fab books. Pictures of your beautiful home and yard. Wonderful pictures of the kids! *L* Love that. It’s how I refer to my grand dog Jenna, our furry grand kid. I’m going to order a tee shirt that says “Dog Grandma” after I get home. We are going to spend Christmas with our family in MI and OH, the Toledo area. Can’t wait to get it!! I also love walking through the house and seeing the Christmas things in every room and the memories that come with them. While I’m home I’ll see the tree ornaments made of bean, bits and pieces of lace or material or yarn and of course macaroni! There is always an ornament that has been your favorite since you were a small child. It’s a tree full of memories. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that 2016 is the best year ever!! Hugs to all.

  21. Mary A. Brown says:

I love your Asian inspired Raggedy Ann! When my daughter was born, I made her the small size (that pattern offered raggedy indifferent sizes) but with her coloring: brown hair and blue eyes. I just retrieved it from the attic, washed it, and gave it to her new daughter! The circle continues! I brought my father’s quilt home after he passed and I love seeing it on the arm of my sofa. My dad’s here with me for Christmas! Can’t wait for the new book…

  22. Loretta says:

HI Susan…so good to hear from you again. Thanks for sharing your xmas with us. Beautiful tree!!! Wishing you and Joe a very Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!!! Take care…. Loretta/Santa Nella, Ca.

  23. Sheri Bodi says:

I Love, love, love hearing from you. Your tree is beautiful. Just like our tree growing up, filled with all the special ornaments and colored lights! Even though I have an artificial tree now, seeing all the ornaments given to me throughout the years from my Grandma and Mom and Dad, and the adorable one my three sons made when they were young, make my tree a beauty:) You can never have too many trinkets on your tree. Christmas Blessings to you and your family…until we hear from you next.

  24. Karen Saunders says:

I can one-up you on the light thing!! My husband came home with a sparkly wand with a star on the end that lights up and makes a tinkly sound when you push the button and it turns your tree lights on and off!!!! You can even tap a guy and turn him into a toad…or visa versa!! He got it at HD. I LOVE it!! We are still in the throws of renovating our last house! We are living in the upstairs and I have to say….for an artist, I am the most pathetic at picking out colors for walls, etc. It frightens me to death. Is the color lighter or darker when you put it on the wall and how the heck can you tell from one little patch of color from a color deck???? Oh dear. We moved and I can’t find anything…I had to buy some new shirts because I don’t have a clue where my old stuff is. Well… I’ll quit whining because I’m just thankful we will finally stay put!! Have a merry Christmas and I hope you get snow and I’m very excited for your new book!!

    • sbranch says:

Okay, that is just too much. I want a wand like that! It is scary to choose paint colors! I agree. I have a decorator girlfriend who has painted so many rooms that she knows what the “good” colors are and helped us with our kitchen. See if you can find someone like that.

  25. Mel says:

We use the same cord for our Christmas lights – best invention EVER!! Merry Christmas to you and Joe. I am looking forward to all your adventures in 2016.

  26. Sammi Janey says:

I do have the little red button for my tree. I, too, have had it for years and love it. Makes is so easy to turn the tree on and off. Your tree is lovely and how wonderful to have such memorable surprise family items you made return to you.

I see you will be making a trip with book to my town of Cedar Rapids, IA at some point next year. So exciting! I do hope I am home to be able to come and meet you.

Wishing you a most Merrie Christmas. Curious as to how the cats are with the tree. Have a new kitten and put only one tree up this year down in family room so I could keep door shut when not home.

    • sbranch says:

I’ve never had cats interested in my trees, even when they were babies. So, just try it and see. Mine have circled underneath, curious at the new thing, but have never climbed it. I think maybe the lights make it a little startling. We will be in Cedar Rapids on Friday, May 13 ~ hope to see you there!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

Do you need a bookstore in the Twin Cities to invite you up for a book signing? Would you come, if you were invited, or is your itinerary set? 🙂

        • sbranch says:

You are so sweet to think of it Pat, but we are pretty set on our path anyway. We’ll be driving 9,000 miles on this trip and we’re trying to get as centrally located for everyone as we can ~ I wish we could visit every city. But my limit is 9,000 miles (because I can’t take Jack and Girl with me and I won’t be able to bear being away more than the two months this will already take ~ always the hardest part)!

  27. Linda says:

Love your blogs. Get so excited when I see your name come up. Impressed that you made such a good doll in your youth! I live in IL and the author of Raggedy Ann & Andy was born in Arcola IL. They had a 100th birthday celebration there last June and there is a museum (haven’t gone) which his family maintains. Arcola is the largest Amish community in IL-very interesting.
Please have a Merry Christmas. BTW, think I’ll put the old colored lights on next year. You inspire me.

    • sbranch says:

There is something childlike in the colors, and what better time to celebrate the child in YOU than at Christmas. xoxo Merry Christmas to you Linda!

  28. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Love all your handmade with love gifts, Susan! The Asian Annie is adorable!! What a great idea to match them to the person you are gifting to. Now the ideas are coming for next Christmas…hmmm… The weather patterns are a bit funny this year. Arizona is getting snow!! Twice this week for us, but I think we are a bit higher in elevation than your Dad. Come visit! 🙂 Also, any book stops in Arizona?? Have a very, very Merry Christmas!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, for my dad, it’s on the mountains around him. He’s got the best of both worlds. You have it, and we don’t! Unfair! 🙂 It’s coming though, yesterday morning it was 30 degrees. And sunny.

      • Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Wishing you a Merry White Christmas!
….I love your movie list, and just wanted to ask what your favorite Christmas movie is.

        • sbranch says:

That’s hard. Love The Bishop’s Wife, Christmas in Connecticut, 1951 Scrooge, Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, and Holiday Affair. I also like newer ones, Christmas Story and National Lampoon Christmas Vacation. I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but this is a good place to start!

  29. Donna Klein says:

    Hi Susan,
Merry Christmas to you and Joe, I loved your post and tree! I am so looking forward to your new book. I also moved (to Vegas) following a divorce where I met and set up house with an Ozzy Impersonator. 7 years later medical issues brought us back to MN where I am readjusting to winter (but no snow to speak of here either). I can’t wait to read about how you changed your life and how you made the adjustments to get you to where you are now, which looks as perfect as one could hope for. Who do we need to talk to for you to get to the Minneapolis-St Paul area for a book signing? That would be really fabulous. Anyway, hope you have a truly wonderful Christmas week.
    Cheers 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Hope the readjustment gets very magical for you, very soon! We won’t get up to Minneapolis this time (we did last time), closest I guess will be Cedar Rapids in Iowa.

  30. judi says:

Merry Christmas and many Blessings in the new year to you all!

  31. Carollee Ferris says:

You are going back to England on a ship? I do so want to go back myself. I have to be content reading my 11 journals of my trips but they are pale in comparison to actually lying on a fell slope watching lambs against the green grass and clouds against the blue sky. Money is such a problem!!!

  32. Barbara Weaver says:

Merry Christmas to you and yours! It’s the season of love!🎄🎄🎄❤️

  33. kay walker says:

I love your tree and was wondering if present were beneath. Do you and Joe exchange gifts? If so what did you give and receive last year?
Wishing you and your loved ones all a Merry Christmas.
    Kay

    • sbranch says:

There are presents under there! Joe and I give each other funny little things, like he hates happy faces, so one year I found a yellow vintage cup with a big happy face on it and thought, How perfect for Joe! Or, we might buy ourselves a family present, like a camera or something like that.

  34. Julia says:

So happy that your Advent has been peaceful and relaxing. I hope today is my last day in the office so I can enjoy my two human kids and three furry canine ones. We have one of those red button tree lighters too! Love it! My mom collects Raggedy Ann and Andy so I know she really loved your blog this time. We are both fans. It was a great way to enjoy my coffee this morning with your beautiful pictures and humor. By the way, I loved both your books and I have all of your other cookbooks! I can’t wait for the next one. My mom has been buying me your beads for my Pandora bracelet also. I think I am getting one this Christmas! So excited! Enjoy Jack, Girl, and Joe and send some snow when you get it to NC!

  35. Joy Pence from Ohio says:

Merry Christmas sweet Sue, Joe and the children! I love your dolls. what a sweet memory. I have mine that a girlfriend had made for me in high school, so she is 37 years old :-). We have a Christmas light switch that is a metal Christmas ornament, we plug the lights into it, and hang it on the tree. You just tap the ornament to turn the lights on and off. I received it as a gift several years ago and have not seen one since, but like you said, it sure beats crawling under the tree. My 18 year old cat becomes a kitten again once the tree is up, she loves to play with the wooden bead garland and the tree skirt and she sleeps under the tree. Too sweet!

    • sbranch says:

It must be warm under there with the lights because Jack sleeps there too. Cat models doing their Christmas duty.

  36. Barb Leib says:

Susan, thank you so much for coming out of the rabbit hole to share your not-boring-AT-ALL life with us. I have Fairy Tale Girl waiting under my tree, also, and cannot wait to start reading it. Merry Christmas to you and Joe, and the kitties.

  37. Linda Metcalf says:

Isn’t the season just wonderful? I have one sister here and a brother coming home also ….so the seven of us who are left will have a big get together this week. I like the visiting and the food best….I do give gifts especially to the little ones but for we big un’s it’s the getting together. My best gift so far is my new grandson, Landon who was born on the 10th weighing a whopping 9lbs and 13 ozs! Merry Christmas and all the best to you and your family !

  38. Becky in the mountains of West Virginia says:

Not boring at all! Loved that you shared your dolls and quilts. Reminded me of my Christmas when me and my siblings all received homemade gifts. Our parents didn’t have the means to buy them. The one Christmas we remember what gifts we got. Merry Christmas dear Susan!

  39. Biz G. says:

Susan, Love your tree. It’s beautiful and so Christmassy. I am getting one of those buttons!! I had a Raggedy Ann doll when I was little – my sister and I traded our binky’s for them. That’s one way to do it. 🙂 I still have a “cabbage patch” doll that my Mother made for me…better than store bought. And the quilt you make for your Mom, is adorable. Pretty good for not knowing what you were doing and using what you had on hand. That’s the way they used to do it years ago. Have a wonderful Cmas – I know you will. -Biz (Annapolis, MD)

    • sbranch says:

I stepped on the button this morning while it was still dark (which it still is at almost 7 a.m.) and voila, tree lights up, and once again I think, I just love that button! It’s almost like a little tap dance! Very little! Merry Christmas to you too Biz!

  40. JoAnn Pollick says:

Merry Christmas to you and yours. So happy you emerged form that Rabbit hole to send us news of your life and loves. I too have “Memory Traveled” recently having finally finished a Flower Garden quilt I began in 1952 while awaiting the birth of our only child. It’s wrapped and under the tree for our son and daughter-in-law.
    Warmest Texas Holiday Wishes.

  41. Michele Gavaletz says:

I absolutely LOVED Fairy Tale Girl. It was my life as well. My 3 sons always said I lived in a fairy tale world and that’s fine with me! I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 breast and lung cancer and I am undergoing chemo. I always bring your books with me to treatments and feel light hearted and happy while that chemo courses through my veins. The doctor says my attitude is everything and your books, blogs and newsletters have certainly helped and I thank you so much. I gave Girlfriends to my oldest and dearest friend for Christmas and Fairy Tale Girl to my girlfriend who moved away. Treasures all! I gave all your cookbooks to my son who LOVES

    • sbranch says:

YOU are too much Girlfriend. I am proud to call you friend. Your wonderful attitude is the thing that will see you through. Sending you prayers, and huge gigantic blessings of love and faith and every good thing.

      • mary spring says:

dear Michelle..an attitude with gratitude makes a world of difference…thank you so much for being such an inspiration !!.. and, yes !, having this heart felt connection with Susan helps us all !!..with love, as always…

    • Charissa says:

Michele, Prayers to you and sending you a big Christmas hug. I love that you love Susan so much as to bring her books with you to chemo. What a darling person you must be and I just love your positivity. I just wanted you to know there will be someone thinking of you and sending extra love your way. xoxo

    • Joy Pence from Ohio says:

Praying for you Michele…. for healing, and strength and peace. I hope you have a blessed Christmas.

    • Charlotte Schultz says:

Praying for you to grow stronger each day, Girlfriend!

  42. Asha says:

Merry, Merry, Happy Christmas to you, Susan, Joe, Kitties and yours! Merry Christmas Girlfriends everywhere! Happy New Year too!

  43. Every blog post you write puts a song in my heart! It’s getting noisy in there! I am having a joyful but peaceful Christmas season and wish you and Joe and your kitties all the joy of the season. I love Raggedy Ann and still have a few of mine. The year I was in kindergarten (1950) my mother made me a Raggedy Ann costume and I carried my Raggedy Andy who was just my size and led the Halloween parade at Garnet School. Such a happy memory from so long ago.

  44. Cindy Stierhoff says:

Love your Xmas tree Susan, so full of warmth and love.
We are off to Pismo tomorrow……see what it is like up there for the holidays before we move in a couple of years..hear Cambria is very festive right now.
Hope you Joe and baby doll kitties have a very, very loving Christmas for all..
Bless your Heart Miss Susan Branch for all that you say to us through the years.

    • sbranch says:

Also there used to be a lit up sailboat parade in Morro Bay . . . another wonderful evening on the Central Coast. See if they’re still having the small Farmer’s Market in Avila too . . . a couple of little secrets. And p.s. Cambria has great antique stores!

      • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

they also have a wonderful pewter shop in Cambria, I used to get a lot of my Christmas ornaments there. loved the Tin Soldier. then hit the Madonna Inn for a cup or 2 of Hot Chocolate or hot tea.

      • Cindy Stierhoff says:

Awwwwwww, we had dinner tonight at Cambria Pines Lodge, such a beautiful lodge, nice people and a lovely grey kitty sleeping in a basket by front door. We visited the Farmers Market in Avila a couple of months ago, such a wonderous selection of pumpkins. Gina’s in Arroyo Grande is now a fav for Italian, tried to go to Jockos in Nippomo, but 2 hour wait.
Merry Christmas to you Susan, dear heart

        • sbranch says:

Well, looks like you had lots of good “secrets” too . . . I always loved Ginas. The best ambience. Nice people. Cozy room. Giant glasses of wine. 🙂

  45. Mary Baldwin says:

    Dearest Susan,
Your stories are never boring! The love and warmth you infuse and the wonderful photography of your “rabbit hole” everyday life are so charming.
Many years ago, I, too, made Raggedy Ann dolls (hearts and signature embroidered as well:-)) for my younger sisters. I wonder if they still have them? I made patchwork quilts for my own children, from their clothing…wonder where those have gone now? Would that they have kept them, (although I didn’t realize their “value” 43 years later…we are the same age!)
Thank you, as always, for sharing your talents…and maybe one day, you’ll create a Susan Branch COLORING BOOK???!!

    • sbranch says:

I SO want to do that! I’m afraid the craze will pass before I get time to do one! I have so many ideas!

      • Trisha K says:

I know you have a busy year ahead, but I think you have plenty of girlfriends who would love this even if the craze is past. (Sorry for so many posts)

      • CarolK says:

OMG!!! Yesss a coloring book by SB. Put me on the pre-order list. They will NEVER go out of style…..

  46. patricia ayala says:

Dear Susan, you are never ever boring! so happy when you come out and play a little with us,such a treat!!! 🙂
My gift of The Fairy Tale Girl, came early didn’t make under the tree!! so in love with the book, what you create all that you do!
All the best for Christmas and the New Year!!
    XOXOXO 🙂

  47. Darylene from South Dakota says:

Getting your blog was like a Christmas gift. I saw it in my inbox, I automatically lit up and clapped to myself, did a little twirl in my office chair and settled down to immerse myself in all things Susan Branch. So, my Christmas week has begun most excellently – thank you very much. I believe it has been about a year since I discovered you (well, you know what I mean). My horizons seem wider and brighter, my hopes and dreams more reachable, and my outlook on life more positive. You opened a door I didn’t know existed. I’m forever grateful. Susan, you are SO loved! Merry Christmas!

    • sbranch says:

I grasp my hands to my chest and think, oh how wonderful. Thank you for that Darlene, and for the spin in the office chair. I loved it all!

  48. CarolK says:

I too have fallen down the rabbit hole but not in a nice way like you have. I’ve got the flu and its taking all my strength and antibiotics to fight this thing. Christmas is on hold this year. NUTZZZZ!!! My sister is like Shelley. From time to time she digs up things from our past and gives them to me. Like a little smock I made out of red print material with two huge yellow pockets on the front. I didn’t stop there. I took my Dad’s printing set (little rubber letters) and ink pad and printed my name all over the pockets. Looking back helps us to remember what a charmed life we had as kids. Merry Christmas to you, Joe, the fur kids and your whole family……

    • sbranch says:

And how very naturally creative we were . . . the sky was the limit in what we could do! YOU get well Carol, thinking of you! xoxo Naps! Christmas will be there next year!

  49. Donna C says:

What a lovely post….and you are NEVER boring, only inspiring. This post has been therapeutic for me for many reasons, and I thank you for that. Because it is raining and very windy here in No. Calif., I am still in my PJs and decided to read EVERY comment from all the girlfriends. We are all alike in so many ways. I have taken small breaks to butter myself a large piece of Panettone Bread, hang an ornament or two on my almost decorated tree, pre-ordered Isle of Dreams, went to Amazon and ordered The Bishops Wife, checked on my sleeping cat and then back to reading the comments……It has been a wonderful morning. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year one and all. xo

  50. Marie (Long Beach, California) says:

W O N D E R F U L post… loved each and every picture and story. We’ve had one of those fabulous tree plugs for many years too… best thing ever! Your children, Girl and Jack, are so precious! I’m very happy to hear all of you found the perfect new home for your mom. That must be a huge relief, especially when she is so happy there! Life is crazy good! Wishing you, Joe, Girl, and Jack a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016. Love you girlfriend! ♥ After reading all your comments, enjoy getting back down zee rabbit hole!

    • sbranch says:

Oh, I just can’t WAIT. You guys are going to love this book. I say that almost every day, I add a page and go “oh, they’re going to love that!” Eeeek! xoxo Merry Christmas Marie!

  51. Sally Roth says:

Thank you Susan, for your lovely blog. It is all delicious and delightful!
Happy Christmas to you and Joe and the kitties! May your New Year be merry and healthy…
    Love from me, Sally

  52. patti says:

Dear Susan, You make life sound so wonderfully boring, which I love, love, love. Oh and I just have to tell you because we are excited to the moon and back. My husband is too an artist (not his day job) we like to eat and live indoors. However I got him and his artwork hooked up with Amazon Homemade this past year and this weekend we sold our 1st piece of Artwork. We went to Maine this past fall and he painted the Portland Headlight. That is the one he sold. OMG we are so excited for the coming year and putting on a full court press to sell more. You are my inspiration, love ya Miss Susan <3.

  53. cathy bullard says:

You mentioned in an earlier post that some girlfriends didn’t like you writing about your divorce. I feel just the opposite. Your life always seemed so perfect that I had to keep your blogs, but couldn’t read them in 2012 My husband & I were going through very serious marital problems. We worked through them & I then read all the blogs I had saved. But it comforted me in Fairy Tale Girl that your life hasn’t always been perfect. Mine still isn’t(I learned that very few are) & I can’t sew, draw, cook or decorate like you, but when my husband wa diagnosed w/ cancer in Jan. I realized what my Mum always said was so true. As long as you have your health you can work through problems. My husband is slowly getting better, but it has been a horrible, stressful year. I was so comforted by your blogs, pictures of crazy, but adorable Jack, pictures of your home & how it is decorated, your wonderful cooking creations & what is going on in your life. Happy Christmas & New Year.

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Cathy . . . and you are so right, no life is left untouched by tragedy. It’s what we do about it that matters, and you sound strong and in blessing-counting mode. That’s wonderful. Also wonderful is that your husband is getting better!!! Here’s to 2016!

  54. Trisha K says:

This is all so very exciting. I’m excited for your 2016, its gonna be a good year!

    • sbranch says:

I think you are right Trisha! So much to look forward to!

      • Trisha K says:

I forgot to tell you how much The Fairy Tale Girl has meant to me. It was my intention to write a review on Amazon, but the words won’t appear. I think its too emotional for me, even though our story isn’t the same. I too waited too long for some things with my head buried in the sand. I came from a generation that was supposed to have it all, but you taught me that even though I work Full-time and don’t have children, I can still enjoy the domestic side of my life. It’s okay to enjoy housekeeping! Who knew? You brought Tuesday Girls to women everywhere. Thank you. Merry Christmas.

  55. Nancy Fenemore says:

So nice to hear from you! Just yesterday, I ordered my copy of “The Fairy Tale Girl” from Barnes & Noble…………..a Christmas present to me, from me ( and you of course) can’t wait. Have a lovely Christmas and bring on “Downton Abbey”!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nancy( a Canadian girl in her Florida winter home)

  56. Elske Olijnsma says:

I want to wish you, Joe and the kitties a very merry Christmas and a blessed, happy, healthy and peaceful 2016! No snow (or cold or any sign of it) in the Netherlands as well. If you feel like travelling an itsy bitsy bit further than England (it’s just across the Channel), we will be happy to welcome you in our home! Would love to have you for tea 🙂

    • sbranch says:

You’re a doll — love the “itsy bitsy bit further” 🙂 I hope you come down for our picnic in the park!

      • Elske Olijnsma says:

What picnic in the park? 🙂

        • sbranch says:

Oh, WELL, we’re coming over next fall, and having a BYO Picnic Basket party at Stourhead in Wiltshire. I haven’t set the date yet, but I’m hoping lots of our European (and even some American) Girlfriends will meet us there!

  57. Christine Morgan says:

    Hi Susan
Well–I am so happy to see St.Charles Missouri on your list of stops. Can’t wait. Would love to know the name of the book shop you will be at. I ran all over yesterday looking for your book for one of my friends and finally found one. If I would have planned ahead I could have ordered it but as usual I am running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get everything done. Like my mom said years ago—you are never really ready of Christmas until the morning of—then you have to be ready —-so you are ready and what ever didn’t get baked, bought or decorated—it’s ok! Wishing you and Joe a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
    Chris Morgan

    • sbranch says:

In St. Charles it’s Main Street Books. And yes, there is always one more thing that could be done! 🙂

  58. Hannah says:

    Merry Christmas!
Your blog posts and musica always remind me to take a moment to enjoy the life around me. It is sometimes hard to do with a two and half year old and 3 month old, but I think it is important to pause and look at life through rose colored glasses. You help me do that.
I love how you intentionally live a romantic life (as much as possible). I hope to keep those old romantic things in life alive for the next generation. Millennials like me need to remember to continue making our homes cozy and inviting places for family and friends, pause, listen to some Bing, cook some good food, and keep traditions going. Sometimes I feel alone in thinking this way, but readings your books and blogs inspire me. Thanks!

    • sbranch says:

I too hope (and believe) that you aren’t alone. It’s those things of home that make us human. Sometimes I think the world is trying to turn us into robots. People forget. That’s why I’m writing the book I’m writing now. Praying it gets out there, for a reminder of all that we have in our everyday lives that matters so much more than what we are being fed. Bing, lovely dinner, lit candles, singing around the house. So easy. Love that you take those pauses. Being a mother is the most important job in the world. Sending love to you Hannah, toasting my teacup to romance!

  59. Deb Harmon says:

Such a lovely Christmas tree! We don’t have snow here in Maine yet, either. Am sure there will be plenty to shovel soon! Are you still going to Scotland too? My friend, Jen, and I went there once and it is wonderful!! Have a blissful Christmas and PLEASE give your furbabies big hugs from me!

  60. Claudia Cole says:

I love your pictures of Jack. What an adorable mischief maker! Oh, and a very good model, too. I wish I could send you a picture of our four Iggys (Italian Greyhounds, they look like mini greyhounds). I have China and my son and his wife have Jessie, Harley, and Zoey. There personalities are so different, but they are all funny little loves. We affectionately call them “the kids”.
Well, I am wrapping my “Fairy Tale Girl” book to put under my tree from Santa to me! I sent my daughter her copy also wrapped for Christmas and will bring one for my daughter in law for Christmas eve. I can’t wait to read it during Christmas week on the couch with China and a cup of tea. Ahhhh.
Your tree is so pretty. So many wonderful memories of family and friends. I like to keep mine lit all day, too.
I still have my raggedy Ann doll. I remember where and when my Mom and I bought her with my birthday money. We took the bus to the next town to shop and eat hotdogs for lunch at the 5 and 10 counter. She needs a bit of TLC and some elastic for her clothes which are on my never ending mending pile.
Oh, I also was amazed at your and Joe’s long legs in that picture. Wow!
    Have a Merry Christmas!
    Claudia

  61. Karen Lotito says:

A very Merry Christmas to you, Joe and the kitties! So glad your mom has a nice new home. I’ve been so very busy juggling work and all the holiday preparations. I’m trying to fit in plenty of “me” time. Last night we watched National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation”. We laughed and laughed at all of Clark Griswold’s attempts to create the perfect Christmas and in the end he says “I did it!” But it wasn’t perfect at all-the house was a mess, the turkey was way over cooked, there were police officers everywhere and there was an explosion caused by Uncle Louie’s cigar. Our “perfect” Christmas is what we make of it whether we’re down the rabbit hole or attending numerous parties. Christmas lives in our hearts and our minds. Enjoy this beautiful season!

  62. Michele Taylor says:

Reading your blog brought back some fond memories. I made a Raggedy Ann doll for one of my girls when she was three that was her same size. They could wear each other’s clothes! So fun! The doll lives at my house now, sitting in a child-sized red rocking chair, waiting to entertain the grandchildren when they come to visit. And I inherited a crazy quilt from my great, great grandmother. She was a dressmaker. The fabrics are so beautiful, and the variety of stitches amazing. A treasure for sure! Thanks for taking the time to blog and bring such memories to mind for all of us, your sisterhood! Wish we could attach pictures to the comments so I could see some of the other Christmas trees and dolls and crazy quilts talked about! I’ll have to just imagine instead. Merry Christmas to you, Joe and the kitties!

    • sbranch says:

I wish so too, blog within blog. I’m sure one of these days they’ll figure out we Need that and allow the posting of pics from commenters! Merry Christmas Michele!

  63. Sandy Bloomer says:

I think we are kindred spirits when it comes to our tree decorating. I have ornaments from when my children were little (many years ago) and always love beads hanging on it’s limbs. Mine is not real (don’t scold me) but I still enjoy it just the same. Getting too old to put one in a stand 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, Sandy

  64. julia walker in Cincy says:

Dear Susan, I am a new fan of yours and live in Cincy. I’m delighted you’re coming here next year and hope to see/meet you then. Your Raggedy Ann & quilt stories are so wonderful they made me cry! So glad your mother is tucked into her new home. By the way, I’ve visited Cuttyhunk Island off & on since 1970~my sister Susan & her husband own a house there. We can see Martha’s Vineyard from the upstairs window. Have you been? Curious in Cincinnati

    • sbranch says:

Yes, years back, I sailed over with friends just for the day. Charming place. We have a Girlfriend here on the Blog that comments sometimes that lives there and is the teacher at the school. Nice to meet you Julia, see you in Cincy!

  65. Peggy Cooper, Pueblo, CO says:

Thanks for this early Christmas surprise. Never boring! I’m retired, but do some volunteering, and I’ve gotten to where I really appreciate the days I don’t need to leave the house. Home really is where the heart is. Much love to you and Joe and the kitties. Oh, and by the way, our kitties Miss Katniss Everdeen and little Sadie Jane are finally getting along a little better. There are still the occasional all out battles, but they have actually gotten to where they sometimes play with each other, and Abigail Gwendolyn the springer spaniel joins in. Makes for a much more peaceful home.

  66. Laurel from Southwestern Wisconsin says:

I have never written on here before but just had to. I have started reading The Fairy Tale Girl and look forward to my reading time every evening because I am enjoying it very much. Reading A Fine Romance was my first exposure to the fact that you even existed and now I look forward to your blogs in my email. You are the most positive and creative person I have ever ‘met’ and the kind of person everyone wants for a friend. Thank you for all you do to make all of our lives just a little better.

    • sbranch says:

Oh Laurel, how sweet of you to write and tell me. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the books. I think you probably know how much I love doing them. Thank you!

  67. Mary Lou Cummings says:

The Raggedy Ann doll in your post reminded me of the one I brought with me after recently moving into a condo from my home. It was made by my best friend from high school for one of my daughters, many years ago. I have it siting in my childhood rocker – from the 1940’s.
My friend was a pediatric nurse in the Brighton and Brocton area for many years. She passed away this past October, but happy memories remain tangent in this precious gift, Hope to see you in May at R.J. Julia’s – can’t wait. A happy and blessed Christman to both you and Joe and the kitties.

    • sbranch says:

I’m surprised at all the wonderful Raggedy Ann memories. Once again reminding me of how very much we have in common ~ if it’s not Raggedy Ann it’s Ginny Dolls or Tiny Tears, or quilts, and always, Christmas memories. Thank you Mary Lou … see you at R.J. Julia’s!

  68. Genie in NC says:

Thanks so much for the link on where to order the button to turn the Christmas tree lights off and on. I’m ordering a few for next year to use as little gifties. : )

When my mom moved into assisted living — years ago, and she has since passed — I would visit 6 days a week. (Thursdays were my ‘re-charge’ days.) I brought crafts and games and jigsaw puzzles to her new home. Soon other ladies would gather and join us. We decorated small masonite ‘gingerbread’ houses, and painted tiny wooden birdhouses on a stick to push into the soil in the summer window boxes. We sorted oodles of buttons, searching through a large pile of buttons to find sets that matched (I bought lots of buttons at Michael’s). We did some coloring with colored pencils and using designs I found on the Internet … all while enjoying coffee and chatting with other ladies who would join us. We all frosted Christmas cookies and decorated them — eating our mistakes. We colored seasonal bookmarks that I printed out on the computer. Every Wednesday we hopped onto the assisted living van to go to “Wednesday morning breakfast club” (visiting various area restaurants). On Sundays in July and August, my husband and I hosted “Terrific Summer Sundaes” in the activity room — donning home-made soda jerk hats and serving ice cream while playing Mitch Miller ‘sing-along’ CDs. Great memories. I saved all of my craft and activity papers/ideas. Maybe some day I’ll compile them into a book in the hope that it might inspire others. : )

    • sbranch says:

I never would ever have to remind you in any way to “be an elf!” You have the whole thing down perfectly Genie! xoxo

  69. Jeannette from the Central Coast says:

Merry Christmas to you, Joe & the kitties! My own cat, Mr. Tucker is sitting by my side as I write. First of all, I loved reading Fairy Tale Girl and was amazed at how much our lives throughout the book were so alike! I really identified with you throughout the whole book (hint: I lived in the Valley and hung out at Bob’s at the same time). I’m anxious to see how part two reads. I have a feeling it will hold, because I, too, have a happy ending. I hope that Chaucer’s Bookstore in Santa Barbara stays on your tour come Spring because I will be in line! Happy New Year!

    • sbranch says:

Fun! Living parallel lives! Passing ships! We’re hoping Chaucer’s says yes ~ haven’t quite gotten to lining up that part of the tour yet, but I’ll post it when we do.

  70. Beverly says:

I put up my Mom’s green ceramic Christmas tree this year for the first time. I have had it in storage for nine years now since she has been gone. My grand kids are older now and discovered the base had a music box in it. She would have loved winding it up for them. She made the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls for her grand kids and I still have one of the Raggedy Ann dolls.

  71. Christine says:

    Susan~
I wanted to wish you and Joe and the Kitties a Merry Christmas! Thank you for your blog and books and all you do for the Girlfriends. I am looking forward to your next book (love that cover) and your trip to England next year (love England and Scotland). Hoping to meet you one day on your book tour.

  72. Natalie says:

    Dear Susan,

I wasn’t able to find a way to email you directly, so I thought I’d leave a note for you here in the comments. I wanted to let you know what a comfort your book “A Fine Romance” is to a very devasted man. His wife and my best friend Tammy died very unexpectedly Oct 29. She was only 50.

Tammy and Larry had honeymooned in England and were planning to return this summer with their kids. She was sooo excited! Though there are many European travel books around, none are personal and Tammy was a very personal person. Your book was THE book for her. I bought it months ago with plans to give it to her for Christmas. Well, I decided to give it to her husband today along with a letter of how much she meant to me and how much she would want them to forge ahead with their plans. He sent me this email that I wanted to share with you:

    Hi Natalie,

Thanks for all the gifts. I’m reading the book. It is perfect. She’d have loved it. There is a quote at the top of the table of contents by GK Chesterton: “There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.” How perfect. I miss her too every second of the day. I’m glad to hear that she was excited to go back to England.

    Thanks for all your help.
    Larr

I can only begin to imagine all the thought, love and care that go into your books and I wanted you to know how much what you do matters. You chose a quote that is comforting a grieving husband today. You choose to share your talents and your heart with the world, which can be a scary thing, but how grateful I am for people that do hard and sometimes scary things. Thank You Susan and Merry Christmas to you, Joe and all the wonderful girlfriends of this community.

    • sbranch says:

Well, it’s only 5:45 a.m. and I’m already in tears. Thank you so much Natalie. I’m so very sorry for your’s and Larry’s loss. Heartbreaking to think of, especially this time of year, when we need all the Tammys we can get. Sending my love and blessings to you both. xoxo

    • Charissa says:

What a beautiful letter to Susan. What a lovely tribute to your friend. I am so sorry for your loss. Hugs to you and Larr xoxo

  73. Vicki says:

So this happened. Two things in one afternoon that restored some of my faith in humanity.

#1) I was standing in line, for a long time. It wasn’t very pleasant; I am recuperating from illness and I just wasn’t up to it. A mother and her two young children were in front of me. I had the time to observe them while waiting…and I loved every minute of it; a much-needed warmth came into my heart and I’m sure it glowed. There was LOVE; just quiet, easy peace between mother and child; such a lovely little family. It was a privilege to be in their presence. Perfectly behaved, relaxed and uncomplaining children…clearly taught with intelligence and gentleness to be respectful in the company of others; nothing intimidating, just good guidance from a conscientious parent. I had occasion to speak to them, and even the adorable and smiley 5-year-old had exquisite manners and knew how to respond to an adult. I mean, they weren’t ‘Stepford’ kids or anything like that…just seemingly well-adjusted and contented. After I left, alone in my car and on to my next destination, I spoke aloud a prayer for this beautiful family (I have no idea who they are), that they be allowed to have a lifetime of Christmases together, one generation after another; that no senseless tragedy strikes them to interrupt and disrupt and change their lives forever in a bad way; that they be gifted with meaningful, happy, productive lives…because you know when you see people like this, that it’s a promise; that they will make a difference in our world in a really GOOD and wonderful way.

And then, #2 – – I found myself sitting with a police officer, discussing a rash of unfortunate events in my neighborhood of which I’ve been victim to (on a small scale) and also to which I’ve been a witness. NOT what I want to be doing four days before Christmas. But I was so struck by the sincerity and dedication of this young, vibrant, handsome police officer. And I caught myself praying again, as I drove home afterward from the police station…I’ve been doing a lot of praying lately, and I’m not even a church goer…that this educated, experienced, committed-to-justice, polite and empathetic, thoughtful, brave, GORGEOUS (had to throw that in there), selfless policeman —there, to protect me and my home, my loved ones AND my town—be held and shielded in the loving embrace of the angels as he goes about his dangerous work, jumping in there when the rest of us scramble, going out in the rain to patrol tonight as I sit safely in my living room, warm and comfortable with my blankie and tea.

Yes, it’s raining…we’re getting some rain in drought-fatigued Southern California. Another blessing. I’m rich with them all of a sudden. It basically came out of nowhere that I expected, but I was pointedly inspired by those who crossed my path today to make my heartfelt Christmas wishes for them…and it made me feel good; I feel certain they’ll come true. I need no other presents under my tree now…and I wish I’d figured out this sort of thing a long time ago. All I had to do was just open my eyes wider, so I could see the wonder…

    • sbranch says:

Your prayers are the true spirit of Christmas, I don’t doubt that you now feel replete. Merry Merry dear Vicki!

      • Annie in IL says:

What an absolutely beautiful letter!! I am in tears, too, although it’s a little later in the morning.

      • Vicki says:

I was so wrapped up in ‘me’ that I forgot to thank you for the nice post, Susan. You always spark me to go for what’s good and soul-filling. (I indulged in a peppermint mocha last night and it was really g-o-o-d.) I’m so glad that you’re continuing to find ‘writing’ very satisfying. This seems to be the right time in your life to be penning these tales. You’ve given us fans a lot to look forward to in 2016; can’t wait for the new book, can’t wait for the travel blog…by van, by sea, by train. Lucky us! I’m sure you have A LOT to plan for…it would make my head spin!

Holiday happy wishes to you and Joe from now to New Year’s…take some time out to capture the moments; don’t miss any of it!…and much prosperity, good health and new adventures to you in 2016! (I would cat-sit Jack and his ‘sister’ in a heartbeat!)

        • sbranch says:

I think I’ve waited all my life to do the book I’m doing now. I hope I’m on time, I think I am. Thank you dear, happy New Year to you and yours. xoxo

    • Charissa says:

Here here Well said Vicki that was just wonderful!!! xoxo

    • Cindy K.Beranek says:

What a WONDERFUL story!!! It is always a JOY see children being kind and respectful!!! I to HOPE ALL YOUR PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED!!! Have LOVELY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!!!

  74. Stephanie C. says:

Hi Susan! I love the doll you made for your sister. You obviously have many talents. So glad to hear that you Mom likes her new place. Your tree is beautiful and looks very much like mine. I have my tree on a timer but I am going to look for the cord with the red button like you have. I am praying for snow!! I am one who loves snow!! I have been so busy with work and Christmas preparations, but today I was off and actually sat and watched Hallmark Channel Christmas movies and baked 3 loaves of cranberry orange bread for our neighbors! Yea!! Can’t wait to get my Fairy Tale book on Christmas Day. My wonderful Mom always gets my SB books for me!!! Oh yea, and calendar too. Counting down for Downton Abbey! So excited about your trip next year too. Lots of great things happening. Merry Christmas to you and Joe and kitties.

  75. Sue says:

I loved this blog. It spoke to me. I, too, sometimes feel that to others my life is boring, but to me it’s totally perfect!
I made the same Raggedy Ann doll. Mine are only 26 years old. I made them (Ann and Andy) for my daughter and nieces. Complete with embroidered heart! I hope they will continue to live in my grandchildrens’ lives!
Merry Christmas to you, Joe, and the kitties! I truly hope it snows for you!

    • sbranch says:

My Kelly Doll could be your Raggedy Ann’s grandma. 🙂 Merry Christmas and thank you for the snow wishes!

  76. Your rabbit hole sounds just delightful! Not a hint of boredom if you ask me.

What a year you have ahead! It makes me both tired AND excited to read about it. And what a perfect year to go to England! It is the Queen’s 90th birthday year and there are big events all through the year including a big exhibition showcasing 90 of her gowns – one for each year of her life. I’d give a lot to see that!

Merry Christmas to you and to Joe, Susan. You have brought yet another year of joy and hope and goodness to my world and that of so many others and goodness knows the world has needed an extra dose of it! Do you know, I think you are like everyone’s favorite aunt or sister… And I hold aunts and sisters in the highest regard!

    • sbranch says:

A lovely compliment Jake! Thank you . . . I didn’t realize it was the Queen’s 90th next year. Even more perfect because no one puts on a Queen’s party quite the way they do. I’ll be sure to post pictures of whatever we find! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  77. Amy in Salem says:

Susan I just loved the raggedy Ann you made your sister. I made Barbie doll clothes for my little sisters back in the late sixties. But my favourite dolls of all time are Ginny Dolls or the eight inch Madam Alexander Dolls. When I married and moved across the country the first Christmas I was gone Mom sent me a beautiful 18″ Lady with full slips and dress with a matching umbrella. Lovely memories Mom’s make.
My doll is some 40years old now and very special as Mom passed two years ago now. I wish your Mother many happy years in her new home. Thank you for allowing me to remember my little sisters and Mom too.

    • sbranch says:

I gave my mom a baby doll for Christmas a few years back . . . she’s the mom of eight and had no babies anymore so I did it, not knowing if she would like it — Oh MY, she LOVED it. She named the doll Simon. He feels just like a real baby, about eight months old, has darling clothes and even bunny ears for Easter. Her neighbors ask to baby sit him when she goes away.

  78. diana from ancaster says:

Merry Christmas to you and Joe!
(Buon Natale e Buon Anno too!)

  79. Sandra says:

What a wonderful Christmassy blog entry! I love to see your mother’s quilt in your home now! What a gorgeous surprise of the Kelly doll you made coming to your place for Christmas!
Just look at those cats! There’s nothing like cats to make a place look like home!
I’m preparing for my Christmas too and am leaving for the mountains tomorrow to join my children and grandson, but, there is no snow yet!
Wishing you a marvellous Christmas and a wonderful and successful New Year!

  80. Lee Rose says:

Merry Christmas to you and yours Susan.

  81. winnie Nielsen says:

Susan, I love all the memories today with Shelley’s doll and your mother’s quilt. I hope she will be very happy at her new place! It is hard to let go of being in your own home, but my mother was more active and happy when she moved to a place like your mother did. Plus, they can take better care and assist the residents which gives the person the built in safety. I think it helps them feel better too!

While you don’t have any snow this Christmas, we are supposed to have above normal heat all week long! It feels weird even here in Florida to be having such a long, long warm Fall turn Winter. Do you think Santa knows to pack a tee shirt for his southern link? I hope so because that big heavy suit aian’t gonna work! Heaven forbid he has a heat stroke before he makes his rounds everywhere!! wink.

Merry Christmas wishes to you and Joe!!

    • sbranch says:

I LOVE her being there. Everything about it is better. My worry level has been cut in half. Happy new year Winnie!

  82. Mary in Phoenix says:

Just finished up our 2015 adopt-a-family program where 56 very needy families in our community got Christmas … complete with presents, toiletries, and food boxes. You can imagine all the smiles and tears as we delivered right into the homes. I feel like I’ve had my Christmas 🙂 Looking forward to ALL the exciting things happening in 2016 … like a new baby book being born … and a book tour that hopefully takes you to the Southwest! With a very grateful heart I wish you, Joe, Blogdaddy and all the girlfriends a very Merry Christmas. God rest ye merry everyone ♥ xoxo

    • sbranch says:

I can’t imagine a better way to have the happiest of all Christmases Mary! Sending all my love for the new year!

  83. Darla Unger says:

Just finished Fairy Tale Girl and loved every minute of it! I can’t believe you meet the Beatles….how fun your teenage Free years were! By reading that book I feel I know your personality a little better I used to think you had a English accent ( hope I spelled that right) and was always very reserved, the book gave me the insight of how Fun you really are and so talented at such a early age. Have a great and wonderful Christmas.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I am not that reserved! And no English accent, except for when I’m alone, painting, and talking back to Emma or Love Actually on TV. 🙂 xoxo Thank you Darla!

  85. Well, I’m not young enough anymore to be driving around by myself too far from home.Didn’t make it up to Pasadena either 🙁 I would LOVE if You would come on over to the beautiful and large Montclair Mall Barnes and Noble in Southern CA. I know they would love to have You. I’m sure out here in the Inland Empire there are tons of nice stores You can plan on.You and Your Husband can browse around Our beautiful Victoria Gardens outdoor mall in Rancho Cucamonga. ox Denise of Coffeeberry Cottage knuckled54yahoocom.blogspot.com

    • sbranch says:

Well, we’re going to Pasadena again, that’s so close to you . . . but we can’t do both, that’s the thing, I’m SO sorry, I just wish we could be everywhere.

  86. Denise S says:

You give all of us many lovely gifts all year in the blog. But talk about instant gratification!! Yesterday I was hoping for a way to more easily turn the tree lights on and off. I figured I’d google when I had time. And then you came up with a solution AND the all-important link! I clicked on it, ordered and then finished the blog! And it was on sale. Who could ask for more?

As always, great pics of the Kitties–do they have stockings and get gifts? Have a wonderful holiday!

    • sbranch says:

You’re going to love it, there isn’t a time I step on that thing where I don’t say, thank you for the little miracle. 🙂 Our kitties get treats over the holidays, but not too many.

  87. pat addison (cave junction,OR) says:

Hello Susan, Good morning girlfriends and Hello. just dropped in to wish you all Merry Christmas, we are anticipating snow today, tonight, tomorrow and Thursday as well… a white Christmas. I think we got your weather and we are enjoying every bit of it. the cats love curling up in their baskets, I think we spoiled them but its worth it. we have a vet appointment for one of them, Furby our barn cat, to get her shots. and still have some holiday baking to do, for the mail carrier and the paper courier. I leave a baked goody out for them each holiday season, at Halloween they get spooky cookies, at Thanksgiving they get pumpkin loaves, and at Christmas they get small Christmas cakes to thank them for their service to us. its a family tradition, been doing it for years. anyway just popped in to say hello and to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year. Merry Christmas everyone…. hugs…. 🙂

  88. Pam says:

Never, never boring! Glad your mum has settled into her new home, it sounds great. Why doesn’t Joe like smiley faces? So excited about your book. I have my copy of The Fairy Tale Girl but I have been saving it until I really have time to enjoy it. It will be a good way to start the new year I think.
I hope you and Joe have a wonderful Christmas and perhaps you will get the snowfall you were talking about.

  89. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

Loved you post this morning! I haven’t been on the computer since last week, so did not know that you had a new post. Here you don’t have any snow at your house, but here in Washington there is tons of it! We are all very happy about it, as there won’t be any shortage of water in the Yakima River, where we get our irrigation water from next summer. Plus, the ski resorts have been opened since Thanksgiving. Would you believe that the major east west route over the mountains was closed for at least 4 hours yesterday due to major snow falling. The snow equipment couldn’t keep up. Been like that since last week off and on. Another major route over the mountains closed a couple weeks ago due to avalanches bad enough to lose a portion of the roadway. That saying: “be careful what you pray for” is so very true.

We are planning on going to see our daughter and grand kids on Christmas. That is if some of the snow melts. For some reason, my husband says that our car is not a snow vehicle to be able to plow thru deep snow. 🙂

Here is hoping that you, Joe and and kitties have a great Christmas and a wonderful start to the New Year! Looking forward to seeing you this spring or summer when you come to Portland, Oregon on your book signing tour. Portland is only 3 1/2 hours from us. Closer, actually than Seattle is.

    xoxo,
    Carol M

  90. Barbara in NC says:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Joe and the cat kids! I love all your posts and look forward to your trip to Scotland so much since we went there, too, and loved it! The people are so friendly and kind. Hope this coming year is full of peace and joy for everyone!

  91. Carilyn Wolski says:

Hello Susan! You are such a very talented seamstress Susan! The Raggedy Ann dolls are priceless! The quilt you made, by just making it up, is inspiring and very creative…..like all that you do!!! They are all treasures to you I am sure!!!!! Glad to hear your mother is safe, happy, and adjusting to her new place called home! Our lives are ever changing, nothing is forever……but so happy you were able to have those items from the past, which means everything to the heart! Your Christmas tree is perfect!!!! I am happy to hear the kitties ignore it! Thank you Susan for this post!!!! It has made me sit down, rest my legs from baking (6 cranberry cakes for my most favorite neighbors), and all of the other hustle-bustle Christmas projects. I’ve missed even checking up on you!!! So busy last week, as on Friday was my son’s 27th Birthday, we traveled to my 91 year old father’s home on Harsen’s Island the same day, and then traveled Saturday for 3 hours (with my dad….singing Christmas songs in the car all the way!) to my daughter’s college graduation, returned to his home after the ceremony and celebration dinner, and even found time to clean his home for Christmas! We will travel on the 25th to be with him, as that’s best for him. Yikes……my feet feel like they are on roller skates! Your world on Martha’s Vineyard IS NOT BORING. It gives all of us Girlfriends a place to sip a cup of tea and nibble on dark chocolate and be carried away to a peaceful refuge of relaxation from the business of the season. God Bless You Susan and may you, Joe, Girl Kitty, and Jack have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! (I think Mother Nature is having a hot flash, as it’s very mild here in Dearborn, Michigan with Robins splashing in the bird bath, still green grass, and the flower pot in our garage has two flowers that have blossomed!!! Unbelievable for December!) ByeBye!

  92. Keri Brown says:

Well…this blog post has been sitting in my blog reader for several days now, waiting for a time when I can pause and enjoy it. What a nice treat it was to sit just now, take some deep breaths, and hear what you’ve been up to. After a day of Christmas baking, Christmsa crafting, (non-Christmas) laundry, caring for my children, and a fun – but brief – surprise visit from some out-of-town relatives, it was time to kick back and relax for a few minutes. I’m so thankful that I saved this post for such a time as this, and I’m thankful that you write about your “boring” life and let us feel like you’re a friend!

    Love,
Keri (infrequent commenter, but always a fan)

  93. Heather L. says:

Merry Christmas! I was in my kitchen this afternoon baking mince pies (which we all love so much) and thinking “Susan hasn’t posted in awhile and it just seems like the time for her to post” — wouldn’t be Christmas without something on the blog!!! And look what I found! YAY!!! Made the sugar cookies you recommended — wow are they good — probably because they have double the amount of butter than the recipe I normally use. 🙂 Good thing Christmas is almost here because I’m nearly worn out from all the prep. 🙂 But it’s been a wonderful season. Can’t wait for the new year and your book and your trip!!!!! What a year it will be!!!!

    • sbranch says:

I know, I almost can’t believe what our calendar looks like. Just one day at a time as they say! Happy new year Heather!

  94. Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Merry Christmas, Susan, to you and Joe! Today we have what is, I guess, the CA version of winter – rain! I was comparing notes with my mom back in Ohio and found it interesting that their weather is much like ours here, only they had sun and warmer weather today when the clouds disappeared. I hope their weather holds, because it’s possible we will be loading up and driving across the country in the near future, moving back to OH from CA.This is probably our last Christmas on the west coast. Next Christmas, I hope to have my own house to decorate for the season! I loved the picture you included of your Christmas tree – it’s so sparkly and festive. My second favorite pictures are of Girl and Jack. When we are finished trekking across the country, we can settle down and get a kitty ( or two! ). Plus , I need a permanent address so I can order your book! Right now, I’m not sure where I would have it sent. Anyway, I hope it’s a happy, happy Christmas at your house!

  96. Janet Hundley - Grafton, WI says:

Merry Christmas to you, Joe, Girl Kitty and Jack and all you love.
Still hoping to see you closer to Milwaukee, but fortunately for me I have relatives in Cedar Rapids and St. Louis.

  97. Lisa Jorgensen says:

So happy to hear you are well and happy and enjoying the season. Your tree is just beautiful. We have a remote control plug on ours, so easy to turn on and off.
Girl Kitty and Jack look like they are spending their days like my kitty Samantha, napping away the day. Is their anything cuter than a sleeping cat?
Hope your holidays are wonderful. I’m trying to have a Merry Christmas even though my Mom is very ill. Cherish every day you have your parents.
Looking forward to your book, hopefully seeing you in Pasadena. So happy to be able to stowaway on your trip to England and Scotland.
    Merry Christmas!!

Oh Susan, I guess we have been friends for a long time!
Just got out my tried & true “Christmas Joy” cookbook of yours, and noticed
    the first page.
I have had it for 20 years & I now look like the gray haired Mrs Claus on page one. What a surprise that was this fine morning!!!
But I feel great about it——so thank you for keeping my fairy tale world alive!

It’s funny, too, because my little book is so messy + stained and even a few crumbs are tucked in with photos our girls and one our first grandbaby in 2008.
Love it love it love it!!
Like you said, “Let JOY be UNCONFINED.”

  100. Susie (Rocky Point, NY) says:

Merry Christmas Susan, Joe, Girl Kitty and Jack! Enjoy a cozy holiday surrounded by all you hold dear. I needed to take a break and I logged on the blog and viola, there it was, a new blog post! So wonderful. Loved the Raggety Ann. I have a collection of them too (don’t I have a collection of everything as my bulging home would attest???) There is something about her that is so special. I’m glad to hear your Mom found a more social place to call home. Sounds like a perfect match. Geez I would like that too; walk out the door and select the fun of the day, meals included. Devine. I’m all set for Christmas. We are keeping it easy and simple. No stress. Little gifts given with big hearts. Good homemade food. Laughter. More laughter. Followed by a good Hallmark movie or Poldark special (heads up Girlfriends; Poldark showing all day on Christmas starting at 3 pm Eastern Time). I have my SB book Christmas From The Heart of the Home out on my table for all to peruse. Love it! I’ve had it for years. Seeing my stash of SB books warms my heart. Thanks Susan! Well, off to fold laundry. My cat Louie will most likely help me. Blessings to you and yours. xo
