SEPTEMBER FIRST . . . RABBIT RABBIT!

R A B B I T   R A B B I T, and there really is only one song . . .

It was almost hard to go to bed the last night of August in 2012, it was such a beautiful night!  The harbor was gorgeous!  And the moon!  Wasn’t it wonderful?   And girls, we did it!  All our prayers and wishes turned the moon the most beautiful color of pink!!!

Here’s how it looked from the beach on Martha’s Vineyard over Vineyard Haven Harbor . . . I don’t think this photo begins to do it justice . . .

It streaked the sky pinky violet . . . Boat traffic was coming and going . . . halyards on the sailboats were clink-clinking against masts, waves lapped at the shore . . . there were lots of other people on the beach with us, doing what we were, making quiet wishes on the moon.

The ferry blew its loud horn and pulled away from the shore; what a beautiful night for a boat ride under the moon!  I couldn’t help but notice the sky is pretty close to the color I want for my kitchen!  (come back when you are done, and click on that for a good laugh!) We couldn’t go home after that; much too gorgeous out for closing ourselves indoors; so we went for dinner to an outdoor restaurant, and then, through the magic of texting, we met our dear friends from California who, while we were at dinner, were putting in an offer on a house in our neighborhood!  The four of us walked over to Mad Martha’s for ice cream (peppermint candy with chocolate fudge!!!), and then up the dark street, where we stood under tangled tree limbs, on a corner across from the house they are dreaming about, eating our ice cream in the dappled light from porches and the full moon, glimpsing a simple, painted-white, wood fireplace with a mantle at the end of a dark hall through the screen door; we talked conspiratorially in hushed voices about how to fix the picket fence, and where they’ll plant trees and roses, and how much we are going to love them living up the street from us!!!  Now isn’t that just about a perfect evening of doing nothing?  Loved it!

And this morning, when I got up, the moon was still there, waiting for me, peeking in through the curtains; I scooped up Jack’s furry little self and we stood at the window looking at it . . . I turned my calendar page to September, and thought, extremely  joyfully . . . because I like it better than anything . . .

Hooray!  Isn’t it exciting!  Now Joe and I are off for our woods walk . . . early-early, this morning, while the month, and the world are still brand new.  Have a wonderful day Girls, may all your dreams come true. Rabbit Rabbit XOXO

  2. Ruth Thomas says:

Good Morning Susan and Joe and Jack, What beautiful pictures of the moon. We get so busy with out day to day “things”, it is good to take a moment and enjoy the beauty that God gave us. I so miss the East Coast – it’s where I grew up – the sounds of the ocean, the ferry horn, the feel of warm sand on your feet. Yet, now I live in the midwest and I love driving by the fields of corn and soybeans and the beautiful blue skies – there is beauty everywhere if we just take the time to look. Your recent blogs have inspired me to do some Fall cleaning – I love to change the page on your calendar to see what the next month holds for me. Thanks for reminding us about the beauty in things that we wouldn’t always notice if we only take a moment to look. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

    • sbranch says:

You are so right; we’ve driving across country many times, have taken the train from sea to shining sea, and this is a BEAUTIFUL country no matter which direction you go!

  3. Paulie says:

    Hi Susan and Good Morning!
Well I missed seeing the blue moon last night so loved seeing it here on your island of the world! So gorgeous! Loved the music Bella Luna…….had never heard that or that artist. Loved it. As for the impending new neighbors, lucky you………oh my if I was only about 40 years younger…….I would be looking here too. However, you have to know there are thousands of us living there in your neighborhood now and to think you brought us all there………….how about that? loving every minute of it too! the only thing missing is the sea air!…..Have a super holiday weekend Susan and Joe!………good luck with the reorg and the painting. The floor is gorgeous! …………m-o-i !

  4. ann says:

i went back and watched the video…LOL….thanks

    • sbranch says:

The reason women are so wonderful, I love our thinking! 🙂

      • Yes we are! I predicted the men’s reaction to her detailed paint colors…..as long as we know and accept that men are THAT way, they are wonderful, too. 🙂 (because we make allowances for them and plan around them….hee, hee)

        • Victoria Miller says:

Obviously men watched this film and thus was invented whatever is the wonderful thing they now have — she could have taken all those things in and the colors would have been perfectly matched and mixed! (Fairly certain it was invented by men, but it’s a guess. But think women are too busy looking at the colors!)

        • Esther says:

When my husband announced that he was ready for more color in the house I thought it best not to share that scene with him. Instead, I shared descriptions of colors and loved that he thought “Dinner Party” for the guest room’s accent wall, and the golden hues of “Honeymoon” for the dining and living room were perfect (Benjamin Moore) choices. I think I can safely introduce him to Myrna, now.

  5. Lee Bowers says:

autumn is the best….looking forward to experiencing it in Martha’s Vineyard and here in North Carolina. I am blessed to get it twice! Have a great weekend. Lee

  6. Becky Maggio says:

So ready for Autumn here in South Louisiana! Today, heading out to volunteer at our church for food/water/ice distribution. Asking your “girlfriends” for continued prayers as so many try to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Isaac. Today I am counting my blessings! As always, starting my day reading your blog lifts my spirits and gives me the first smile of my day. Thanks!!

    • sbranch says:

I think about you all every day Becky. ♥

    • Dawn from Minnesota says:

Continued Prayers and Thanks sent your way!!!
My husband told me about an employee at work (here in Minnesota), who recieved a phone call from his Mom….she was calling from her ROOFTOP in the Parish area and wanted to know if he could call someone to come help her!

    • Lisa Nelson-Jones says:

Becky, my prayers are with you…May you all stay safe and protected, and I hope Isacc dissipates quickly.

  7. Winnie Nielsen says:

Susan, your quote today ,Here comes September, was so perfect to read this morning with a cup of Pumpkin spice Coffee in hand! Fall is my favorite time of the year and turning the page to September means that it truly is on it’s way. Living in hot, humid Florida means that fall, in the usual sense, does not happen EXCEPT for those of us who defy the heat by decorating our homes and cooking the fall favorites! So today I am wearing one of my fall tee shirts, drinking coffee out of my new mug with an adorable scarecrow painted on it and preparing later to make white chili and baked apples. This is how we put the fall “Sweet” back into Home Sweet Home florida style! Oh, and dragging out the box of fall decorations AND placing your book Autumn(my absolute favorite book) on my bedside table!!

    • sbranch says:

Now that’s what I love to hear!!! Girl after my own heart . . . mmmm baked apples!

      • Rhonda D. says:

Winnie, I love how you’re making fall happen even in hot, humid Florida. As Susan said above “I love how women think.” I’ll remember this for other areas of my life. We can make it happen. Just like turning the Blue Moon pink! It looked so beautiful watching over the island (and the girlfriends)on “September Eve.” What a wonderful way to ring in this fresh new fall month of September. It’s got a whole different feel for me now. Happy September!!

      • And I found at a yard sale this morning a tall, large, fake pumpkin (for $1.00!) that has holes drilled in it to hold lollipops, but I will put a candle lamp inside instead so light will shine through like in one of your photos of your front porch at Halloween.

    • Linda from Lancaster, Co PA says:

Winnie, It’s hot and humid here in PA. But I have turned the pages of my Susan Branch calendars (one on my refrigerator and one in my bathroom that keeps track of my workout progress!) and will over the next few days put up my fall decorations–plus some new pumpkins I got at a Hobby Lobby in NJ. I’ll be thinking of you decorating, too!

      • Doreen Strain (from Florida) says:

Winnie, I too live in Florida and right about know you can walk into my home and think you’re in the middle of the woods in Upstate NY. We just don’t get to experience the fall like those up north. But I must tell you, I turn the AC up to make it cold a few nights so we can sleep with the heavy quilt on and we make a fire in the fireplace to experience the ambiance. I have the house decorated with tons of fall leaves and all the fall colors so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything fall brings with it. Why I even might put the fan on and throw some leaves in the air to watch them glide down to the floor. LOL! There is just something about Autumn that just causes a stirring in that little cozy spot in our hearts. Now…off to the kitchen I will go tomorrow to make some pumpkin bread and get the smell factor going too! LOL! Happy Autumn! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  8. Joan Lesmeister says:

Yes, at 9:30 last night the moon was tinged pink, then at 12, uh huh, definitely pinkish through my lace curtains & now at 5am still lookin’ pink – will wonders never cease?! The power of prayer! What a wonderful evening you had Susan, best of luck to your friends & their bid! Happy September to all XOXO

  9. Chris Wells from West Texas says:

    Dear Susan & Girlfriends,
I have decided since we can turn a Blue Moon “pink” (and it was!) maybe I can cool these temperatures and September 1st WILL be the beginning of Fall. I will spend Labor day….laboring, but it will be a labor of love as I clean away the dust and break out the Fall Decorations and banish this intolerable heat.
We have all been friends because we are FOSB. But after yesterday, I feel we all just became a little closer. This is a very special group of girls (and a few guys, I know you are out there). Thank you Susan, for bringing us all together.

  10. Debbie P Weedsport, NY (near Syracuse) says:

Just flipped my calendar page…just wonderful! I’m crazy about blue so it makes me smile to look @ September’s page. Wow…what an amazing moon! I forgot until this morning so I missed the pink but it was still gorgeous in the stillness of dawn. You’re lucky to be surrounded by good friends, Susan, and to be adding another couple to “our” neighborhood…awesome! Hope you enjoy this weekend…I’m heading out to do some gardening a.k.a. my personal therapy.
    Happy September, everyone!
PS: the peppermint ice cream…perfectly mouthwatering!

  11. The power of prayer never ceases to amaze me! Now, the power of pink!

Thought of you when I read this little bit of prose this morning: “Lord, it is time. The summer was very big. Lay thy shadow on the sundials, and on the meadows let the winds go loose. Command the last fruits that they shall be full; give them another two more southerly days, press them on to fulfillment and drive the last sweetness into the heavenly wine.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

Thank you for that hilarious movie clip! I’ve always been “moonstruck” by Myrna Loy; folks still say my 90-yr-old mother looks just like her! lol

Bless your heart for blessing ours!! XO

  12. Betsy says:

Thank you for letting us know about the Blue Moon. My husband and I went outside into our little patch of land and admired it. I am a girl that believes there is a song for everything and everything has a song so……I started to serenade my dear husband….”Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone……Without a love of my own” etc. He got this little grin on his face and told me I was one silly girl and he felt really lucky. It made my day. xo p.s. Again you mentioned one of my FAVORITE movies and I thank you!

    • Betsy, that is so lovely. For Susan’s post to inspire you to look at the moon which inspired you to sing to your husband which inspired him to say such a lovely thing to you and then for you to tell us and inspire us all. Full Circle! 🙂

    • Victoria Miller says:

Last night I went out to look at the moon, and was inspired to sing this song myself! Great tune!

  13. Kathy B says:

My heart is as full as the pink moon! :)) And the bonus is I realized this morning it is time to turn all my SB calendars to Delicious September – – Ah,….My cup runneth over.

  14. Deb Surman from Illinois says:

Good Morning Susan and Happy September! We had cloud cover in the sky last evening, you could barely make out the moon, but I know in my heart that if the clouds had parted, it would have glowed pink just like yours on the Vineyard. I can’t tell you enough how much I love your blog and the wonderful feeling you and the girlfriends here give. The Karma here is so wonderful. You know I’m one of your biggest fans since I purchased your first book in 1986 and I am so waiting in anticipation for the new book, I know it will be a huge success for you! Love ya!

  15. jennifer says:

    Susan,
September 1st has been one of my most favorite days for many years! Maybe it began when I was in grammar school. All the smells of fresh school supplies, or knowing that the cool, crisp days and crunchy leaves were just around the corner. Burning a fire in the fireplace, yummy foods, SWEATERS!! 🙂 I’ll be digging out my Autumn decorations this week!! Oh the anticipation. :)))

  16. Katy Noelle says:

Oh! Just happy, happy, happy! So many happy things! Lots of happy things happening for me, too! (happy sigh! =])

    xxo

  17. Hi Susan! I love Saturday morning posts! It starts my weekend off on such a happy note 🙂 Thank you so much for that!! xoxo Debbie

  18. Andi M says:

    Happy September 1st Susan,
We are a little late this morning going for our walk because I couldn’t stop reading a good book. You probably have already read it, The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. I thought of you and England and thought I should drop you a note. In her story the main character runs off to the Cotswolds to hide from a huge mistake she has made at the law firm that she works at in London. Many cooking and gardening references, just right for those of us who are drawn together here on your blog. Have a great long weekend. My daughter (Abbey) has been waiting patiently for me to walk, gotta go.

  19. Carrie says:

What a glorious treat last night. The blue moon was extraordinary; I know there was a pink hue to it here in Central Northern CA or perhaps it was the rose colored glasses I started wearing since reading your blog! Thinking of all those who have been affected by cancer as well as those suffering at the hands of Isaac. I am so grateful to you, Susan, for this magical blog. It is one of the highlights to my day!

  20. Kim says:

I enjoy your posts so much. They always leave me feeling inspired and positive. I have really enjoyed watching Jack grow up. What a character! I am really looking forward to your new fabric. Any idea when it will arrive?
    Have a happy day!

  21. Linda Pintarell says:

Inspiring to wake up to your beautiful words and pictures. Thanks, Susan. Have special friends visiting this weekend – a gal from my high school days… many, many years ago and then we were roomies after college for a while. Still connected and loving it. That’s what girlfriends are all about. Take care all.

  22. Marva says:

What a beautiful evening you had for the last day of August. This year is just flying by! I look forward to a nice cool fall. We have been so hot and dry here in the midwest this summer that I am well past ready for cooler weather. I just checked you Autumn book out from the library yesterday and have been enjoying looking through all the recipes I want to try. We are getting much needed rain here due to Isaac and I couldn’t be happier about that. Everyone have a great day!

    • sbranch says:

Make Pumpkin Cheesecake, Corn Pudding, Touchdown Chili, and Roasted Beet Salad for starters!

      • Dawn from Minnesota says:

Touchdown Chili : .D Once upon a time, I made the most wonderful chili of my very own, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, my family loved it and I felt happy. Then one day, I discovered and made Susan’s recipe for Touchdown Chili. My family really thought I had outdone myself and proclaimed this as the best chili I had ever made! Well, since I cannot tell a lie…I told them it was a recipe from Susan Branch…..and now….we all love it and pretty sure we will be eating it happily ever after!

  23. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

I’m chuckling away this morning – that clip from Mr. Blandings is one of my favorites! Lately with talking to finishers as well as deciding what to paint the kitchen (I keep dreaming that last touch will be this month) I have quoted that same scene! Even loving, patient husband laughs! The contractors don’t really get it but we do! Good luck matching the sky!
Loved that the moon was tinted pink!
Are you and Jack enjoying the newly refinished floor yet?? First scratch will undoubtedly be from kitty claws! 😉

  24. Joan Lesmeister says:

Love September calendar page! Yumm, Iowa Corn Bread with Bee Butter, what a delicious September treat! Thank you!!

  25. Anne says:

Love that movie! Cracks me up every time she says “something between a healthy winesap and an unripe Johnny”. Makes perfect sense to me 🙂 How exciting that your friends are moving close by – what a fun little neighborhood you have. Just got my Autumn book off the shelf…it’s my favorite. Don’t know why but I always feel so lucky to be alive when Fall comes around – thanks Susan 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Makes perfect sense to me too! So cute!

    • Deb Surman from Illinois says:

Mr. Blandings is in my top 10 fave movies of all time and that clip is a classic. I remember years ago, Sherwin Williams used it as their paint commercial on TV. Wasn’t Myrna Loy so classy?

      • Anne says:

I totally forgot about that commercial – it was so clever. You are so right – Myrna Loy was the best – no one like her. My favorite are the Thin Man movies – I want to be Nora!

        • sbranch says:

          Her clothes were gorgeous!

          • Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

I am so happy that others love Myrna as much as I do! Thin Man & Mr. Blandings. . among my favorites too! Love her voice & her clothes were always the best! She’s one star who women & men both love! Maybe because she’s so down to earth we feel we could all be Myrna!! So wise & so droll – what a doll!

          • Victoria Miller says:

She was wonderful, and I had the good fortune to see her perform onstage in Barefoot in the Park! She played the Mom, and the audience went crazy when she walked on stage. I still remember it! Glad this came up, I’m going to go back and watch her films for awhile!

          • sbranch says:

            That was lucky!

  26. Marianne in Hidden Meadows, SoCal says:

A pink moon!!! — I knew we could do it!!! Proof that God heard our prayers!!! And Fall today on top of that (yes, Sept. 1st is the first day of Fall by Girlfriend decree and the Girlfriends are always right) – does it get any better? I think not….

  27. Country Gal says:

Lovely post , you made me feel as though I was there with you , thank you for that ! A beautiful evening it was here as well and we watched the same moon as you did , that always amazes me that some one in another country is enjoying the same moon as we are ! Have a wonderful weekend !

  28. Lisa says:

  30. Mary Cunningham says:

Happy September Susan! Love our Pink(blue) moon, only saw a bit of it last night due to clouds bring much needed rain ! But enough to be romantic for my Tim and I to renewed our vows , on the eve of our 40th wedding anniversary! A gift from our church family, Red Velvet cake, covered with white basket weave icing and red roses made of fondant, red punch and music from The Carpenters. Thirty five of our dear friends and family came to celebrate our “wedding”, and a full moon to boot! Love is grand! Wrote it all down in my Susan Branch Book of Days ! <3 Mary <3

  31. Cathy McC. says:

Dear, dear Susan — you gave me a birthday gift today and you didn’t even know it! Our blue moon was a hazy white last night (which I got to go out and see with my visiting daughter and little granddaughter) , so as a 16-year cancer survivor, to see your beautiful pink blue moon was a Godsend. Thank you, friend. Ethel

  32. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Isn’t it funny how different the moon is according to where we live! Here it was lemon yellow against a navy blue sky. It was gorgeous, but I so love how it was Pink on your end of the country! …..just wanted to share a cute quote from my 3 year old granddaughter last night to her mommy, as they were admiring the blue moon; “Mommy, I wish I had wings so I could fly right up to the moon.”
Have a beautiful day Susan, I’m off to bake your pumpkin cheesecake!

  33. Linda in Texas says:

Am I the only one who had never heard of “rabbit rabbit”? I had to google it. lol. Glad I found out about this if for no other reason than to know what’s going on.

Love Myrna Loy and that clip is perfect. Yes, I love how we think.

How wonderful for you to have more friends moving to your (oops, our) neighborhood. You are blessed.

    • sbranch says:

I think the perfect thing would be for all my friends to live in this neighborhood!

    • Deb from Dixie says:

Hi Linda……I am right there with you…..I thought I missed something…because I have never heard of Rabbit, Rabbit either.
So, I had to Google it too……but up came:
      Rabbit Rabbit Dresses
      Rabbit Rabbit Designs
      Rabbit Rabbit Day
      Rabbit Rabbit Clothing
I thought, well maybe September is “wear something with a Rabbit on it clothing month?” …. LOL.
Then I saw Angie Tink said Rabbit Rabbit back to Susan……and saw your comment and tried again……using the Wiki.

And so for anyone, who was wondering and didn’t know ( which may be only Linda and me…LOL) ……
Here is the very cute and fun definition of Rabbit Rabbit ( per Wiki).

“Rabbit rabbit rabbit” is one variant of a common British superstition which states that a person should say or repeat the word “rabbit” or “rabbits”, or say the phrase “white rabbits”, or some combination of these elements, out loud upon waking on the first day of the month, because doing so will ensure good luck for the duration of that month. Today, it is a frequent tradition in many English-speaking countries.

Thanks to Susan…I learned something new today…..and now every first of the month, I will say Rabbit Rabbit, because a little extra luck comes in handy!

      • elizabeth says:

So glad, Deb from Dixie, seeing in your reply that “white rabbits” was common in England. That was the phrase I learned (actually “white rabbit”) to say on the first day of the month. Hooray for traditions!

      • Victoria Miller says:

And much better to say ‘Rabbit Rabbit’ for luck than to deprive the poor creatures of feet! Thanks for your research! I didn’t know either and was about to explore!

        • Cathy McC. says:

And ditto here, I didn’t know either, and felt a little strange asking! Was about to Google, but read on and found some answers. Thanks, all you FOSB! We’re still waiting for the backlash of Isaac here in northern Indiana, but “Rabbit, Rabbit”– maybe it’ll miss us. (Yes, I realize I didn’t say this upon awakening, but better late than never, perhaps.) Ethel

        • Anna Limont , Camano Island, WA says:

I’m so glad you shared that, I had no idea what it meant either, what a cute little way to greet the month! I like that it goes for any month of the year, I’m going to say that to all my grandchildren and then explain it to them. Start a new fun tradition! – All the comments from the girls are really a pleasure to read along with Susan’s wonderful blog!

      • judi says:

Hey, thanks Deb:) I hade no idea what it meant either. Suppose we will have to wait for Nov. 1st now. I think waking up to the fab moon will bring us all luck.

      • Pam G says:

thanks for the rabbit, rabbit info-I had no clue about it either.

      • DonnaRay Evans says:

Thank you, Deb. I was feeling so “out of it” about the Rabbit, Rabbit…..wondering where I missed that, but figured if I read all the comments someone would clear that up. You can always count on girlfriends to clue you in. Thanks! As always, DonnaRay

      • Debbie in So,Ca. says:

Thank you Deb…I too was wondering but didn’t think to look it up. Girlfriends are so helpful!

      • Linda in Texas says:

It’s nice to know I’m not alone. You were very thoughtful to post the definition. Somewhere I read that it is more widely known in the New England area. That made me feel slightly better.

  34. Lisa G. says:

Is that quote about autumn your own? It’s a beautiful sentiment.

    • sbranch says:

If you mean the one that starts “A whiff of woodsmoke”; then yes, I wrote that for my Autumn Book. If that’s the one you’re talking about, then thank you!

  35. Dawn from Minnesota says:

    Susan,
I am so Happy that you are Happy! I love to think of You and Joe alive and well on Martha’s Vineyard….such a wonderful island full of sweet memories. Seriously, can you believe it…..sky the color of summer showers (your kitchen), the Blue Moon looking as pink as pink can be…..and….and…..a heart full of Happy!!!
Isn’t it a miracle that we can FEEL what Happy feels like…and that we can remember it…so on unhappy days we can pretend to be happy and then we end up feeling happy all over again?! We are so lucky to be people! xoxoxox

  36. Judy from Oregon says:

Autumn my favorite season. Our moon here was not pink but it was still beautiful every time I woke up and saw it throughout the night. Great clip of Myrna Loy I am a big fan of hers from the Thin Man movies.

    • sbranch says:

The moon wakes me up too. I used to think I had thin eyelids and then I found out it happens to lots of people!

      • Judy from Oregon says:

I love it when I wake up during a full moon and can look at it throughout the night. When my kids were little I worked at night so they didn’t have to go to a babysitter so on my drives home I would enjoy the full moon. One time I mentioned to them how light it was outside during a full moon so they asked me to wake them up when I got home so they could see it. Since it was summer, I thought what a great learning experience for them. It turned out to be one for me as they were less than enthusiastic after they had been asleep for several hours. I still get a good laugh over it every time I think about it.

      • I think it’s the gravitational pull because I keep my room very dark at night and I never sleep well during a full moon. When my last son was born it was a full moon and they had women on stretchers in the hallway because of the over abundance of women that went into labor.

      • Debbie in So,Ca. says:

Oh that is so funny…I thought I was the only one who ever thought that about my eyelids!!!

      • Kathy from Heafed to the Fell, Brevard, NC says:

“Thin eyelids”—I love that! I think my eyelids are getting even more thin as I age!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

LOL! That is what I tell Norm–I can’t sleep with any light in the room. He says, “Close your eyes” and I say, “But I can still see the light through my eyelids!” 🙂 There must be some scientific explanation why some people can “see” light with their eyes closed and some can’t… 🙂

  37. Vicki in Cincy says:

    Hi Susan,
We went garage sale-ing this morning and I found a tablecloth much like the one I got from my grandmother but somehow misplaced (or does one of my darling sisters have it at their house? 🙂 ). So I scooped it up! I drank my coffee on the deck and read the paper as it is my little vacation from the work week.. I feel on vacation doing that on my deck. Can’t believe it’s September!! My son’s wedding is in 4 weeks!! So excited. Thank you for sharing your beautiful evening with us..the moon was beautiful here as well. Take care!

    • sbranch says:

You have something wonderful to look forward to!

    • Linda from Lancaster, Co PA says:

Vicky!!! My son’s wedding is in four weeks also! We’ll have to catch up with our wedding news a month from now! Best wishes for a beautiful day. Ours will be Oct. 6. One day after my birthday!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

We’re heading to a wedding later today and our anniversary is September 15th. This is a good month to be married! 🙂

      • Vicki in Cincy says:

Linda! Congratulations on your son’s upcoming wedding. My son’s wedding is on Sept 29th. I hope you have a perfect day for the wedding and we will have to share our fun afterwards…Best Wishes!!

  38. Audrianne says:

“Just once in a very blue moon, just once in a very blue moon,” sings Nancy Griffith. I love this time of year just like you. Spent the morning at the farmer’s market, then to the knitting store to buy yarn for a pumpkin hat for my new grand niece. Life is so very, very good. Here’s to pretty leaves, cool nights, crisp apples where you can find them, and a pumpkin large enough to sit on. “I would rather sit on a pumpkin than a velvet cushion,” Henry David Thoreau.

    • sbranch says:

I think it’s something like, … I’d rather sit on a pumpkin and be all alone, than be crowded on a velvet cushion! He liked the country life!

    • Victoria Miller says:

Personally, I’d prefer a velvet cushion on a pumpkin. That’s just how I am.

    • judi says:

I love Thoreau and what a pretty name you have:)

      • Audrianne says:

Thank you. It was invented by my father who wanted a Jr. to my mother, Audrey Jean. He fell in love with her when she was in the 4th grade and he in the 6th; he stole her ball at the spring picnic. He had to wait until she was in 10th grade to ask her out and did so following a Dutch dance performance during Holland’s Tulip Time. They married two years later on Thanksgiving eve, two days prior to his departure for Korea. Were married for 52 years until my mom’s death due to breast cancer seven years ago. I consider it an honor to be her junior.

        • sbranch says:

          What a beautiful love story!!!

        • Tawni urrutia says:

Oh my, Susan said it, what a beautiful love storyis right! I love a man who knows his mind…when that man is 9, well, he’s a star!!!
Continued love to your family Audrianne!
          XOXO,
          Tawni

  39. jane townsend says:

Loved the photos of the pink moon over Martha’s Vineyard, especially as it was cloudy where we live in England! Also what a treat to have another post so soon after your last one. Many thanks Susan.

    • sbranch says:

Pink blue moons don’t happen every day! xo

      • Holly says:

Hi Jane! So glad you found the site. Make sure you read all the comments, and get to know the “girlfriends”. And, go back and read the older posts, they are all great!

I hope this is my friend Jane from Wales & “JANE’S THREADS AND TREASURES”, but if not, welcome anyway!

  40. Miss Winnie says:

    Susan,
Love the clip from Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House! We build custom homes and that movie is one of our favorites…and that scene is our favorite in the movie. Love anything with Myrna or Cary! Your blue moon was spectacular — and it was pink!. Ours was beautiful here, but we don’t have the charming harbor and sail boats in the middle of Kansas. Thanks for sharing your evening with us.

  41. Victoria Miller says:

The Blue Moon was Pink! And I’m so appreciative of the photos you posted today. I tried last night, but for whatever reason my little camera — which has taken some nice moon photos previously — would not let me have a decent photo of the most amazing moon! Your harbor is much nicer, too — background here is the port of LA and high buildings around it. I’m never ready for summer to end, and, fortunately, here in SoCal it should be nice through October, but I didn’t enjoy turning the calenders’ pages this morning. I’m a summertime gal.

Your kitchen floor is beautiful and you folks do a great job of maintaining and improving your lovely home. Sure you had a lovely walk — there’s a lot to be said for a good walk!

    • sbranch says:

We let our house go for too long and now are paying the piper! Sort of snuck up on us!

      • Victoria Miller says:

        But, ah, you danced….

      • Kathy from Heafed to the Fell, Brevard, NC says:

We did the same thing with our landscaping but most of it needed to be replanted anyway. We bought in 2005 and since then we have noticed that the deer, who KNOW are protected here, like most of what was originally planted. Chipmunks really like New Guinea Impatiens. Next year is the year for the yard but I am going to have a professional plan drawn up with mostly rocks, statuary, etc. and only native plants that the deer will only touch if they are desperate. One of my friends finally got so disgusted after a wild boar started rooting around in her flower beds that she stuck some plastic flowers around her mailbox and called it a day!

  42. Patricia Triska says:

September 1, where O where did summer go. It was a hot dry summer and hoping for a brisk fall but hate the thought of snow coming up behind. Yes, I agree with you. We live in a beautiful country from sea to shining sea. I have been lucky enough in my lifetime to see most states with only a couple remaining. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. Enjoy your labor day weekend. Let the leaves begin to fall. Oops, mine are already falling.

    • Victoria Miller says:

It is a beautiful country, but I’m with you — where did summer go? It seems to pass more quickly than any other season!

  43. JoAnn says:

So loved moon watching with all of you gals! This morning as I was driving to my Weight Watchers monthly weigh-in, there she was….bella luna. I just feel so happy to be alive!! Hugs to all..

  44. Karen C (from the heart of the peidmont, Greensboro NC) says:

    Susan,
Today is Football day here in my house. Made some spinach dip to start the festivities. Saw the wonderful Moon last night too. Made me think of Neil Armstrong. Was it really that long ago that I sat on the couch in my pj’s watching the first Man on the Moon? Hugs to all, and best wishes for a wonderful weekend to every fighting cancer. Go Gators!

  45. Christine Anderson says:

Oh what a beautiful Blue Moon we had here in So. Cal. So majestic, lovely! We never turned pink, but still lovely!!

I love Mr. Blanding builds his dream house. That was such a funny clip!!! I may need to watch again soon!!
    As always thanks!!!

  46. Diana - Highland, IL says:

HAPPY SEPTEMBER ALL!! or is it the CINNAMIN-TEMBER!! LOL.. THANK you sooo much Susan for posting your pictures of the moon and gorgeous evening. As Deb from Illinois said earlier, it was raining and cloudy, so no moon sightings for us, but that’s o.k…. we have been doing the rain dance so long our legs are much shorter and we are getting much needed rain here!! Thanks for all you do!..How exciting for the possibility of a new friend coming to our neighborhood!!! Done working now, so bringing out the fall decor, changing the “scents” to fall and maybe whipping up some “pink” margaritas in honor of the pink moon last night!!! We must live and enjoy each season to the fullest!! Fall – Bring It!!! 🙂

  47. Linda from Lancaster, Co PA says:

You know, often the saying goes–hard times draws friends closer together. Your last post, Susan, was simply amazing. Many hard and painful things were shared–and I could feel that with each post, we all were hurting and praying and caring as we never have before on your blog.

We’ve always been girlfriends, but now I sense something deeper–might I say we’re Sisters/Girlfriends?? Our Covered Wagons are circled! We mean business! We’ll never stop caring for each other. And part of caring is pointing out the beauty in each day, laughing, and listening. Thank you, Susan for leading the way. But also thank you Girlfriends/Sisters for being yourselves because when you post, I read it and am ALWAYS filled with JOY!

  48. I loved your “Blue Moon” photos, Susan. Autumn is also my favorite time of the year, especially the month of October, when the skies are a brilliant blue and the trees are in their glory of fall color. I chose October as the month to be married as i love it so much!

Good luck to your friends on their bids to buy a house near you –hope they hear good news soon.

    Happy Labor Day Weekend!

    Hugs,

    Pat

  49. Cyndi in NC says:

I didn’t see the lovely pink moon you saw but here in North Carolina but it was a beautiful site anyway. One of the few cloudless nights we’ve had. We went to New Bern to have dinner with our daughter and on the way home it was clear as a bell. Once we got home even all our trees didn’t block it. I was so hoping we’d have a clear night as I love the Blue Moons. It stilled looked like our same Moon but seeing it twice in one month is just extra special. Also I love the Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream Home. The room color scene is a scream. *L* Just saw it not too long ago. Classic!

  50. Mary Ann in Mexico says:

Oh what a beautiful pink moon! We didn’t have that luscious color, but I could swear I saw blue on the outer rim! Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is one of my top 100 favorite films of all time. And that scene is one of the top five best scenes EVER!! BTW, that is a real house and it was built in Westport, CT. I drove by it a few times and visualized Myrna Loy picking her colors! What a beautiful sky blue color for your beautiful kitchen!

  51. Treese says:

My horse Mischka and I had an enchanted evening walking in the Colorado Rockies under the most magnificent blue moon. It was almost close enough to touch. I love looking at the gifts God has given us-so pure and simple yet wonderous.
    Treese

  52. Denni from MN says:

I was out the door early this morning to have a MN State Fair moment, six hours of walking, walking, walking! The later it got the more crowded everything was so I called it a day. Only to come home and find you’ve put “My view of heaven” right before my eyes!! The boats in the water and the moon so full, it did my body, my mind and my soul good to see those photos of yours! I barely feel my feet aching, gazing at the moon! What a delight of a day and it’s not over, yet!!!

  53. Deborah says:

    Susan,
What a wonderful, blue moon it was full of promise and romance {and some craziness because all full moons bring that out.} I am smiling because we are one day closer to a harvest moon!
    Happy September!
    Your Friend,
    Deborah

  54. Dawn says:

    September….oh, September!
Time for me to pull my ragged, worn, deeply-loved and often-used copy of Autumn off the shelf…that you signed a few years ago, there in your cute kitchen, while Joe printed out the map for path in the woods for us. Such a precious memory for Ramon and me. 🙂
Sending you, Joe, Jack, and Girl Kitty a warm autumn-y hug.
    xoxoxo

  55. Carol C says:

Like everyone else, I am happy to be taking out my SB Fall book but will miss the Summer one! Love, love ’em both. It’s too warm here to get out the real Fall stuff but I am putting up my fall curtains and getting out Fall quilts. Am making one of all the maple leaf pattern out of all fall scraps. Hope to finish is by the end of Sept. Haven’t seen Mr. Blandings or the Thin Man movies. Next on netflix! Love the quote on my SB calendar—“If I were a bird I’d fly around the world searching for successive fall.” Me, too!!!

    ;;;

    .

  56. Holly says:

We missed the moon last night due to thick clouds coming in from the big storm, and now were getting the long needed rain. Enjoyed your moon pics though.

We’re having a Labor Day “staycation”! My sewing machine has been buzzing, (should be the vacuum buzzing, but it’s not a “staycation” if you work! Right?) 🙂
and creativity has been flowing. I just love piecing quilt blocks!

    Happy holiday girlfriends!

  57. Yesterday I tried to rally the troops (Girlfriends) to get excited and wear PINK the entire month of September in some fashion (doesn’t have to be on the outside) anyhoo, I truly did not mean that the MOON HAD TO DO IT TOO!!! By the way “Thank You Moon” for supporting all of those in need of our love and prayers….it had to be amazing for those of you who got to see a pink haze over the Moon, we didn’t have a chance to see the Moon because of cloud cover and that was fine I knew it was up there shining hope for all of you to see in your piece of the World. NO RAIN FOR US in IN YET?? I can not fathom how in the World we can be ignored once again even with a Hurricane coming through our region?? I’m going to be positive and assume maybe we would of had severe storms and the rain would not have been worth that damage!! SEPTEMBER is my favorite month (Anniversary coming on the 10th) and doubt if we will be blessed with any “color” with the drought this summer and again I will compensate with color in the home….I already have my “Orange and Clove” Candle (on a warmer…no flames with kitties)….and will soon be looking for my Pumpkin; last year I went untraditional with an odd shaped “warty” one that everyone loved and told me “only you would have something so unusual and wonderful”…..sweet to hear….Thank You Susan for the beautiful pics of the “Pink Moon” which should prove to all of us that the LORD can make anything happen when we trust HIM and Moon Watching makes us LOOK UPWARD which inspires PRAYERS which gives HIS BLESSINGS TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF US. Happy September!!!!

  58. Tricia B. says:

    Hi Dearest Susan!
How lucky for you to see that gorgeous moon last night!!! It was so beautiful and PINK!!!
We had cloud cover last night so I couldn’t see it!!! :(. How fortunate for your friends to find a home so close to you. I hope all works out for them!! Thanks for the great blog!! GOD Bless!!! Love and Hugs, Tricia B. XOXO!!

  59. Lisa Nelson-Jones (East Tennessee) says:

Too beautiful…I posted a picture of our East Tn blue moon last night on FB, so pretty! Well, I must tell you, you have so inspired me with your written “words” and art that I have been doing research on the history of calligraphy and am endeavoring to teach myself (and then take a class starting in October) to learn calligraphy. I know you must get sick to death of everyone asking about your beautiful art, but my question is (if you would be so kind as to share ;)), how do you make your words “hollow” so as to paint them? I know I am probably not even using the right terminology, but I am not sure what it is yet 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art, and self, with us.

  60. Peggy Cooper says:

I’ve been waiting anxiously for September 1st so I could get out the Autumn book. (I have rules for myself you know.) Now, if it would just cool off enough so it really feels like autumn, I’d be a really happy camper. Been super buys canning peaches and making tomato sauce from our backyard bounty. Canned spiced brandy peaches for the first time. Supposed to be good on vanilla ice cream. I’ll let you know when we open the first jar in a few weeks. Happy Autumn Susan and all the girlfriends.

  61. Victoria Miller says:

There are such wonderful comments here from so many people in so many places! I love reading the comments.

That song — Bella Luna — I HAD to find out who sang it and now the CD is on the way from Amazon. I texted my daughter (practically the only way I can communicate with her, mostly because of the three grandchildren) to ask if she knew who Jason Mraz was and she texted right back “yes, and I LUV him!” A little inspiration is a wonderful thing, and from this Blog comes LOTS AND LOTS of inspiration! Rabbit Rabbit to all!

  62. Aunt Esther always said for every morning fog in August, there’d be a snow in winter. Even flurries count! We had a morning fog all save five or six August mornings; I’ve made sure the oil furnace is full, the propane tank is full, and the pantry is full…I am….ready!

    • sbranch says:

You are …. smart! Do you really think it will be a snowy winter?

      • Let’s see, warmest Winter ever 2011/2012, drought across the Midwest with 50 days in the 90’s, 10 days in the 100’s (hasn’t happened in 100 yrs.), seems to me it may be time for a BLIZZARD!!!! I do think we all should be prepared for anything and everything!!! The Farmer’s Almanac isn’t predicting anything major…..I’m just thinking this hasn’t been a predictable year thus far!!! When I lived in the Country it was easy to see the black woolie worms (harsh Winter) crossing the roads, floating cobwebs, hornets nest either high (bad Winter) or low (mild Winter) in the trees, these markers are not visible in the City so it stifles my seasonal weather predictions! Sigh….we had open fields on the farm and we could get blocked in for days with a minor snow because of blowing….the plus up here is they are right on snow removal and people get right out and go!!!! YAY! We will get what the Lord wants us to have and weather is the one thing we as mere mortals cannot control!!! As good Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts….BE PREPARED!!!

    • Victoria Miller says:

Sue your aunt was a wise woman in your part of the country, but this doesn’t apply in coastal southern CA. We get “May-gray”, “June gloom”, “July!-Why?” and “August-Must?” marine layers and fog throughout the summer. But it’s only snowed here once in recorded history! But I used to live in Ohio. Wise of you to prepare!

      • sbranch says:

I grew up in So CA, we didn’t have June gloom then! It’s relatively new! Strange huh?

        • Rhonda D. says:

I hear from the “wise old owls” that a lot of the hornet nests are high this year, usually the sign of a lot of snow/harsh winter. I had several up high on my country home where I have never ever seen any before. I’m wondering…I guess we’ll get what God has in store for us.

  63. OH I do love autumn!! Not as much as Spring, but it’s a close 2nd 🙂 Yuck to summer lol I so can’t wait for it … PEI has already cooled off quite a bit and I’m loving it 🙂

Loved the moon last night. I showed the kids as we drove home and they wondered why it wasn’t blue… I explained the WHOLE story to them while I had them all caught in the car 😉

and to celebrate… YES IN DEED! Hot chocolates with peanut butter and butter on toast 🙂

    Scrumptious 😀

  64. Janie says:

Happy September days to you and Joe! I am getting ready to bake a persimmon pudding and make the house smell wonderful. I live in the south (NC) and will be using persimmon pulp from wild persimmons (the small ones). They make the BEST!! I wish you both were here to enjoy a piece with my husband Mike and I.

We just completed a new remodel of our home. We completely gutted our kitchen. I am loving my new fresh space. Makes me happy to walk into my kitchen and cook and entertain those I love. Your kitchen floor looks just like mine. I can hardly wait for more pictures as you complete your project.

Also, I greatly appreciate that you are not ashamed to share with others that you believe in the power of prayer. How can anyone look at that moon, the beauty of this earth and not feel so connected to our Father. May God richly bless you!!

    XOXO Janie

  65. Elaine Serblowski says:

    Hi Susan,
Just wanted to remind everyone its time to watch Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Trouble with Harry”. It was Shirley Maclean’s first role. My husband and I watch it at least once every fall. We almost have it memorized! Gorgeous fall colours. I have my very own “Autumn” book this year so will be making your Cranberry Apple Crisp as soon as it cools down enough to turn the oven on. I can’t wait to see your beautiful kitchen. Blessings to all the girlfriends and hugs to you and Joe and the kitties (Petey, too). Elaine

    • sbranch says:

That is truly the most delicious apple crisp . . . in the world . . . as we know it today! Speaking with all the humility I can muster on the subject of apple crisp. 🙂

  66. Fall glorious Fall! Last year I was walking very gingerly after a broken toe and surgery on lower leg to remove basal cell melanoma, so I could not get out like I wanted to to really enjoy fall! Now I can decorate earlier than I did! Yeah! I also found the Autumn book that I did not have last year, double, no triple yeah! What fun it’s going to be!
And oh what a beautiful blue moon to boot! Saw lots of pictures of it from all over the world, and yes some were our wished for pink! Mine was not but it was sure beautiful! God is wonderful in his creations!
How exciting Susan to have more friends moving to your beautiful island in the atlantic!
Hugs to all! Oh that petey sure has a way of sneaking into your wonderful pictures, he is such a sneak! And isn’t it nice to have a kitty cat follow you around! Our new one Sammy does the same thing to me! Love it!
    Hugs again, blessings to all
    Tweet! Tweet!

    • sbranch says:

I know, it makes you feel so popular! We went to CA last September and said, never again, the island is just too pretty, we should save CA for February!

  67. Debbie says:

I missed seeing the Blue Moon last night due to cloud cover here in central IL, but right now we are getting some much needed rain and for that, I am so thankful!. Fall is my favorite time of year and I miss the cold, crisp mornings and the crimson of the sugar maples in NY State where I lived for most of my life. I try to find beauty in the golden colors and warmer weather here in the mid-west, but I’ve come to believe that the best days of Fall are those spent with family & friends. Have a great Labor Day weekend!

  68. Jane alexander says:

You can’t imagine how excited I was to see that you actually got the pink blue moon!! WooHoo!!! Yea God for giving us a pink moon!!! I half expected to see it pink in New Jersey, but it was georgeous. And tonight as well, it is sort of yellow. But yours was PINK!! Yea! I know He is answering all our prayers of blessings to come.
    Love,
    Jane Alexander

  69. sharon says:

Ah. September, October, November, December. The last 4 months of the year really are the very BEST! September just for being September. October for the beautiful fall colors here in N.C. November,of course there’s Thanksgiving, wonderful food & family getting together. And last but not least, December is the merriest month of all, & just that Christmasy feeling does a body good! I can’t really decide which month is my favorite, I’m just glad I get to enjoy them all.

  70. Pam G says:

our moon was a hazy white in a very dark sky..and still no rain. Your pink moon was so lovely to see.
I hope I get to see Martha’s Vineyard someday. Your wonderful pictures have made me love it.

  71. MaryAnn says:

Autumn–my favorite season! I turned the page of my Heart of the Home calendar to September and got out the Autumn book today. Thanks for the wonderful inspiration you provide! Looking forward to seeing pictures of your kitchen when it is finished.

  72. DonnaRay Evans says:

    Hello Susan,
I love Autumn, also. Part of the reason is the bounty here in Upstate NY. The roadsides are lined with farm stands spilling over with apples, cabbages, corn, squash, honey, sunflowers…..rich colors and textures…..love it! Meals plan themselves as you load up your basket.
Happy sock-hopping on your new floors! What a pleasure it will be for you to get back into old routines with new thankfulness for those simple joys.
    As always, DonnaRay

    • sbranch says:

New Thankfulness is exactly right, I already have it. Just to be able to turn on the water in the kitchen sink, even though all the counters and floors have drop cloths on them now and Joe is washing walls so he can paint. I’m STILL happy cause I can go IN there!

  73. Mady says:

It was a gorgeous moon last night here, too, in Vermont And your sky in the 2nd picture — sky-blue-pink!

  74. Gumbo Lily says:

    Happy (pink) Blue Moon!

  75. Sarah says:

I think my comment may have disappeared…anyway, I wanted to tell you that today is my birthday and my husband gave me your 2013 calendar for my present! He knows how much I love them, and that I have kept every one ever printed. 🙂 So my birthday came literally “once in a blue (pink) moon,” and I got your calendar. Sounds like a perfect day to me! 🙂 Oh, and also, we have a vineyard vines store here in Virginia now, so I got to shop there for my birthday. Now I ask you, does it GET any better?? 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Happy Birthday Sarah! Sweet, from your husband . . . No, it does not get any better . . . Love your happy heart!

  76. Margot in Virginia Beach says:

We love the sailboats! I hope your friends will make it through their first winter on the Island alright.

    • sbranch says:

Her house has one of those old-fashioned brick bread ovens in the wall next to the kitchen fireplace! They are already talking about sitting at K. table, eating fresh bread, having tea, during snowstorm! Such a pretty thought!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

It is all in you “mindset”. I think MV’s winters are somewhat like Minnesota’s though maybe we have colder temps, maybe not? But I LOVE the idea of winter coming–cozy winter days and evenings–fires in the fireplace, reading, knitting, hot apple cider or hot chocolate, etc. Soups and stews and bread baking in the oven. I’m tired of the heat and humidity and I’ve long since run out of recipes not using the oven. I miss using the oven, making the house smell good all over, and I miss sweaters, long jeans, jackets, scarves, hats and mittens. It has been a loonnngggg summer and I’m cheering the thought of Fall around the corner and then winter around the NEXT corner! 🙂

  77. Sherry Moran says:

I’m so excited! There is a very real possibility that I will be coming to Cape Cod during the week of Sept.17-25! Of course, I told my husband that if at all possible, I want to go to Martha’s Vinyard! Maybe I’ll get to see for myself what I’ve only seen through your blog!

  78. Linda says:

I think Mr. Blandings Dream House and Thin Man should be resurrected instead of Dallas! Meryl Streep could play Myrna Loy’s parts perfectly! Should we all petition Hollywood to do these!HA! I couldn’t see the moon last night for all the clouds (alas no rain) but it sure is a well pronounced face on it tonight! Thank you for the pictures of the “pink” moon or was this trick photography? Happy for you that your friends will be your new neighbors..how very special that will be. Thank you again.

  79. Kirsten Wichert from So. California says:

Here comes Autumn……..well it doesn’t get cool here until December… But all the same, when it does arrive I’m so happy! Your photos of the moom are beautiful!
Can’t wait to see your new prettied up kitchen. Most of all, I need a new Susan Branch book!!!!! One I can read over and over, even fall asleep with it on my chest. I am still reading and re-reading all the others for now. What’s next? Will it be the english trip diary or pancakes? Or do you have something else up your sleeve?

  80. I thought the moon would actually be blue but I found out that it’s just called that. How cool that you got a pink moon. Jack seems like such a lovable cat. I’m looking forward to see what you end up painting the kitchen. The floors are amazing! My kitchen was painted mustard yellow in 2010 and then after that I kept on seeing pink and aqua kitchen stuff and wished that I had painted it something that would go with that. sigh! Anyways, all my Swedish stuff (which is blue & yellow, brick red and green) coordinate with my mustard walls.

  81. Barb, Ludlow-MA says:

    Goodmorning Susan,

Thank you for the beautiful Pink Moon pictures. I am so happy all the prayers were heard to turn the Moon Pink for all those going through such difficult times.
Your pictures also made me feel like we were all right there…..as you could hear the water rippling on the ocean, and the ocean air, and feel a nice breeze. That is what your posts do to me……..make me feel so Happy!

I chuckled when you said Rabbit Rabbit as I was told years ago, it was every time you see a Rabbit to say Rabbit three times and it means goodluck. Now at least I know the real meaning of the story behind Rabbit Rabbit! Plus the paint video……..LOL…….really needed a good laugh yesterday, was a real pick me up…thank you! Plus how Exciting for you and Joe to have your best of friends living a street away……oh my goodness…..there surely will be a new welcoming dinner party with many of your delicious recipes and so many things you will all be aable to share and do together……so happy for all of you…yeah!

Once again those Lace curtains appear…….this time with the Moon! Love Lace….so pretty! Hello to Autumn and May you Susan&Joe……..and all the Girfriends have a Blessed Sunday. Hugs and Smiles:)

  82. Laura Ann in Vermont says:

Not sure I’m ready to say goodbye to summer, because I love it so much, but yesterday I found the cutest little hat (light brown straw cloche with a little buckle on the side) and the softest, cuddliest tweed-like shawl at the discount store and now I feel all ready for fall.

I drove home last night, late, under that Bella Luna, which lit up huge white clouds. What a canopy it made as I found my way home along the dirt roads! Spectacular!

  83. Jack says:

September schmeptember….let’s get real and go back to your story about how you spent the lst tday(evening) of August …….to the point —– Peppermint Ice Cream , with Chocolate
After dinner ? ? And a couple days before you wrote me about getting fat?
Please no make that PULEESE !

    • sbranch says:

Did you have me confused with someone who has will power?

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

Jack, didn’t you know that Peppermint ice cream with chocolate has had the calories removed? That is what I was told so it must be true, right?! Which is a moot subject as remember, they can WALK to the ice cream store? That is working off the calories before eating the ice cream, while eating the ice cream, and after eating the ice cream! 🙂 LOL!

  84. Jamie from Virginia says:

….still laughing and ComPLETEly understanding every color Myrna Loy chose for her walls…..I loved that movie. There is a recent tv commercial for paint where the girl asks the male salesclerk for a “purple” paint….not a PURPLE…and not a purple…but a PuRpLllle…..makes perfect sense to me! Poor men….they must live in a chronic state of confusion with us girls…..lol

  85. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

Happy morning everyone! Guess what!? Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House is airing on TCM Tuesday evening @ 5:00 PDT! Happy Day! 😉

  86. The Handmaiden says:

Susan, something about you reminds me of “pollyanna”..you are just so darn cute and smart and you make everyone happy. Ever grateful to you for sharing so much with all of us…..love to the moon and back!

  87. Christie Ray says:

Oh, yesterday was glorious! The wind was blowing a different way…like in the movie Mary Poppins…I expected to see her floating in with her umbrella and carpet bag;) When it rains here, there is a faint smell of wood smoke from the fireplace…it makes me so anxious for the first chill of autumn.
Oh, how I LOVE the color you have chosen for your kitchen, and yes, the photo you took of the sky and the pink moon…THAT is the VERY color!!! ( I showed “Summer shower” to my husband, and we think it is the perfect color for his office:)
I must tell you, the August page of your calendar inspired me to order a very old copy of Pollyanna (the book is PINK:)) with the inscription “Mother, from Edward and Nellie, February 24th 1915! I had never read the book…can you believe it? So I’m catching up now on all the books I missed out on as a child…I did not excel in my reading classes:( I have found an insatiable desire to read, now that I am older, and there are so many classics I am falling in love with. Thank you for sharing so many with us.
Have a beautiful Laborless Day weekend, dear,
    Christie

    • sbranch says:

I read Pollyanna when I was ten! So impressed with “calves foot jelly” — I thought I was Pollyanna! Good for you for “catching up” — you’re in for such a sweet treat!

      • Christie Ray says:

My grandson will think I’m Pollyanna….I’m always saying, “I’m so Glad you came to Grammy’s!” and he says, “Grammy, why you say you’re gwad?” I then have to explain what “glad” means;))
You certainly are Pollyanna, our dear Sue, and we’re ALL glad!!
Such a treasure of a book…can’t put it down….pure sweetness:)

  88. CJ says:

Watched your beautiful moon in Maui Hawaii. As always, took my breath away. Also saw pumpkins growing on a farm on the slopes of Halekulani. I guess volcanic soil males them extra special. From my moon to yours Happy September.

  89. Nellie says:

What a beautiful moon! Wonderful that it was pink just for the right occasion! I have participated in Komen 5K events a few times. Wish the moon would be pink for one of those!

MV has to be the place to be! Being able to relocate there is amazing! I hope you will enjoy having your friends close by now. If we didn’t have family, friends, and community involvement here, it would certainly be tempting to me to consider moving to MV!

Have a good Sunday evening, and hopefully Monday will bring a great beginning to another week. A week in which you find your remodeling projects completed and Jack and Girl Kitty will be able to reclaim their rightful spots.:-)

    xo Nellie

  90. Susan Ericksen of Bainbridge Island, Washington says:

Ahhhhhhhh Autumn. the most wonderful time of the year! I could make a list longer than my arm of the things I love about this time of year….! I have a tuxedo girl at my home too! Her real name is “DeeDee Dinah Washington” but we all call her Dinah! She is a moose of a girl…23 pounds to be exact. She is now 5 and a love. Anyway, she says “Meow, Meow” to Jack…She watches him on my computer screen…..When I sit down to “Susan Branch” she hears the bird chirpping across the screen and she knows she has to get up on my desk, lay down in front of the screen and wait to see Jack….She is a romantic and also obsessed!!! ha ha! Anyway, enjoy your autumn walks and all the things that go with autumn, I know I am…. Going blackberry picking tomorrow to celebrate Labor Day! a day off from work…..Sunshine and the sweet taste of those warm berries in the sun….yum, yum……Bye for now and “meow” from Dinah!

  91. Marge says:

Hi – thanks for the video of The Blandings, what a great movie, wish they made them like that today. I then clicked onto a Jeeves and Wooster clip – so British, just love them. Thanks for the reminder. Also, the blue of the evening sky is just perfect for a busy kitchen likes yours – love blue. And the floor-Zowiee! is all I can say to that. What a great job. I’m getting out my Autunm book as we speak and putting it by my chair for evening reading. They always help put me in the mood. thanks for ALL you do for us girls…you are a blessing from heaven. Hugs to you, Joe and kitties too.

  92. Rosemary says:

This does not quite capture the charm and beauty that your experience does…but, I was at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington,Tx watching a Michigan vs. Alabama football game when I just HAPPENED to look out the windows at one end of the stadium and just there was the pinky moon. It was pretty amazing that I hit that just right. It was gone very soon after that…out of my vision, at least. As I said, that does not compete with Martha’s Vineyard for a moon watch!

  93. Gail Buss says:

Oh my goodness, Susan, you lucky girl. I wish some of my close friends would move near me one of these days. Well, you never know – I might get lucky yet. The sky was beautiful and that will be once beautiful kitchen when finished. Everything will look brand spanking new! Loved seeing all those sailboats as well. Best stop right now and look at my “Autumn” cookbook! Lots of hugs, Gail Buss, Bev. Hills, Fl XX

  94. Karen C says:

  97. Mary S. says:

Thank you, Susan, for sharing the promises of Autumn!! Even tho’ it’s still hot in CA, the sun is changing and I can feel it coming!! Yay!!
That video clip is hilarious!! I love how the contractor keeps saying, “Uh huh…” That’s a really good movie!

Love from Mary S. in Fresno, CA

    • sbranch says:

Yes, and he’s not writing anything down!!

      • Janet says:

“Have ya got that? Red, green, yellow, blue, white…” Hahahahahaha – hilarious! And don’t forget about the Zuzz-Zuzz water softener!

PS – girlfriends! “Mr Blandings” is playing on Turner Classic Movies right this very minute [Tues evening 9 pm].

  98. Mary S. says:

    P. S. Ok, I’m lost!! What does, “Rabbit Rabbit” mean?!?

  99. I’m finally getting a chance to read your latest post! I just loved your photos of the pink moon and boats. We wanted so badly to see the ‘blue moon’ that night but we (finally) had rain that reached us up in Illinois from the hurricane. And I agree with you about Autumn…I like it so much I named my daughter Autumn! And now she of course loves it. She calls it her season. She’ll be so happy to see your photos as well.

  100. Pat R says:

I felt like I was at Martha’s Vineyard, right there on the horbor looking at the boats and the beautiful pink moon. Thank you for letting us go through the paint selections with you. I am in the middle of selecting paint colors and I have not decided after months of looking. Isn’t fall a blessed time of the year.
