It’s All Pure Logic!

Birdie reprieve!  No winner announcement today, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some Musica! to go with the no winner — and we should celebrate because where there is no winner, there are no losers!  Making us, by process of elimination and pure logic, all winners!  In fact . . . might has well make it one more day for everyone to sign up for our drawing (scroll down for more info)!   Because I’m taking the day off!  In about a half hour I’m going with my girlfriends, Martha and Annie, to have “our colors done.” Later on another girlfriend, Enikö, is coming to tea!  It’s a red letter day!  The snow has all melted, the sky is blue, it’s a gorgeous day, and I get to go play!

I had my colors done once a long time ago, and found out I was a cross between a Spring and an Autumn.  It only confused me.  The only real thing I got from the experience is that I should wear lots of orange.  Not exactly helpful since, with me and orange, except as a watercolor, the twain does not meet.   But Lowely had hers done a few days ago and thinks the experience was “magic” and “life changing.”  Either way, I’m off with the girls and we’ll have fun!  I’ll let you know how it goes!  Have a wonderful day!  See you tomorrow!

  1. Susan,

My beautiful wife is now between 35 and 40, and I think she’s more fabulous than ever (and getting “fabulouser” every day)! You and Christian Dior know what you’re talking about.

Have fun… having your colors done?

  2. Sherrill Kerbaugh says:

    Susan…

Have a wonderful, fun, eye-opening adventure today…you deserve it!
Wish I was going with you! 🙂

    Sherrill

  3. There’s nothing better than spending time with friends 🙂 Enjoy your day!

  4. Monica says:

Have fun! I had mine done many years ago and found I was a “Winter” – lots and lots of jewel-tones 🙂

  5. Terri says:

When I read you and your girlfriends were ‘having your colors done,’ the first thing that popped to mind was that you were all going to the hairdressers, lol. I had forgotten all about the ‘what season are you,’ color theory. I remember not quite falling into one season too, though I remember something about ‘jewel tones,’ being good…Anywho, sounds like a fun girlfriend day – enjoy! Thanks for the mood music this morning, it seems to suit me today, lol.
p.s. Where is your birdy? (Not the giveaway, but the one who flies across your page). Did I somehow miss seeing him, today? A little under the weather here, so maybe I just missed him while reaching for another tissue.

  6. Claudia Lann says:

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I’d missed out on the “birdie” drawing! Thank you, thank you, thank you for waiting for me!

  7. Linda P says:

Oh, I AM happy!! *clap, clap, clap* I had my colors done, quite some time ago. They say I’m a “spring” however I think some of the springs make me look dirty – haha!! So glad you get to go with girlfriends, it’s the best! Of course, Jack & Kitty will be in a funk when you return. Enjoy!!

  8. Ginnie says:

Hope you have a wonderful time! Even if the results this time confuse you again, you’ve had a great day. And my philosophy is wear what makes you happy. A colleague of mine, after a bunch of us at work had our colors done (I was Winter), told me wistfully that I could wear black and when she had her colors done, she was told she couldn’t. And she used to love wearing black. Isn’t it too bad that someone spoiled it for her?!

    • Pat Mofjeld says:

That is EXACTLY what I think! What a shame and, besides that, she SHOULD wear whatever color makes her feel good when she wears it–at least that is my opinion… 🙂

  9. Carol D. says:

    Sounds wonderful~have fun!!

  10. wendy says:

    Love the little birdies!

  11. Pat says:

Had my colors done many, many years ago, then I changed hair color. Wasn’t the same anymore. Have fun. Pat in Indiana, where the snow melted too.

  12. Dale Worness says:

OK! What does it mean to “Have your colors done”? Do they tell you which colors look best on you? I hope they would tell me I’m a “red” person, since that’s one of my favorite colors. It will be interesting to find what you are. I’m sure you and your friends had fun finding out! Let us know the results!

  13. Karen Legg says:

Thanks for extending this giveaway – I have to tell you, on the blog feed that comes to my email, there is no place at the bottom to post comments! I always scroll down and look in case things change overnight, but no. It took me a couple of days to think of coming straight to the website to comment.
Those little bird salt-and-pepper shakers took me decades back to childhood – my mother used to collect little porcelain birds, and I loved them. She’d let me play with them and use them to decorate my playhouse. One day, a woman who was visiting my mother brought her daughter along, and we ended up in the playhouse. This darling child decided to ‘play house’ by cleaning (never the best idea!) and piled all the little birdies in a box that she set on the windowsill. In not very long a time, she managed to knock the box out of the window, and the birds were all cracked or smashed when they hit the ground. I may have acted badly in response – I can’t remember every playing with her again.
Anyway, those little green birds made me think fondly of my mother and my playhouse. Thanks for posting them!
    Love, Karen

    • Kathleen Hollingsworth says:

I was looking for the comment spot in my email as well Karen! I hope you win the little birdies!

  14. Margie from Lavender Cottage says:

I can’t help but wish I was with you and your friends. Sitting at a desk on the 12th floor is not very colorfull. Have a great time and can’t wait to hear all about it!!

  15. Claudia Lann says:

Well …… now…….. I read the whole blog and it’s delightful! (As if it could be anything else!) (And I clapped my hands too!) Cannot imagine how I got to be the FIRST to comment here. Where is everyone? They must all be out on beautiful” blue sky days” having fun with friends like you’re doing. But that’s O.K. I’m having a wonderful “RAINY”Hope you are having a wonderful day.

  16. Barbara Belcher says:

    HI Susan,
I hope you had fun getting your colors done.
I am an Autumn, red hair, green eyes, pale w/freckles, I always knew I was an Autumn, BEFORE they did colors and told you what you are.
I went to Ireland and people were asking me directions …. I said, ” I don’t live here.” Hence, the red hair, but really strawberry blonde. I noticed most people had red hair or black hair. Why do they associate red heads with Ireland I do not know, but I am Irish and Scotish and French. I know you could care less but I just wanted to be part of the conversation, sorry if I bored you.
Thanks for the last chance to win the birdies or something else.
Have a wonderful day and take care. I am looking forward to your next fanstatic blogs. I hope I win!
    Barbara B.

    • Debbie '51 says:

You didn’t bore ME! That’s what’s so fun about this “girlfriends” blogging – we never get bored with one another! I love it!
Good luck winning the little green birdies!
      I’ll be jealous, though.
      Good day to you all!
      Deb

  17. Nola Richter says:

You’re the best part of my day! How I’d love to see these sweet birdies in my kitchen . . .

  18. Marianne Richardson says:

    Susan,
I enjoy your blog so much – for the ideas, music, recipes, and MV pictures. As a summer visitor to the Vineyard for the last 12 years, I love seeing the places I love in different seasons and through someone else’s eyes.

As for the bird salt and pepper set, it’s so charming. I have a small collection of s & ps myself so I create a little centerpiece on my kitchen table with the different s & p, some flowers from my garden, perhaps a candle, or some other little trinket. The birds would have a nice home at my house. 🙂

  19. Claudia Lann says:

oH NO!!!! (hit the wrong button!!) Was trying to say I’m having a wonderful “RAINY” day here in West Texas, (and ANY “Rainy” day is a GOOD day here), and it seems the perfect day to try that Milk Cake recipe too.
So ………….. see you when you get back!
    Love, Claudia

  20. Cheryl says:

Thank you for your “Musica” on the blog today. (I can’t get started) I am in the process of sorting all varieties of things from my elderly mother… it was just the music she and my father would have listened to in years gone by. The perfect background for my task. Thank you too, for always bringing soothing thoughts and inspiration!

  21. Sher says:

Thank you for the wonderful photos and views of your everyday life. I love the way you see beauty and joy in all of your surroundings. Your Christian Dior quote is so heartwarming, and even though I don’t mind being “over 40”, I agree that I’m much more facinating now than I was as a “youngster”. Besides, now I can enjoy the fact that I’ll be a GRANDMA soon!!! Yea!

  22. susan supan says:

you bring calm to hectic work days. thank you.

  23. Karen L Wilson says:

Yes I remember having my “Colors” done. It was magical. All those lovely swatches of fabric draped around my neck. I’m a summer. Lots of bright primary colors. If you needed to know. Enjoy your Girl Day!

  24. Just Cats says:

I would love those little birdies. Please throw my name into the hat. Hugs, Deb=^..^=x4

  25. Priscilla says:

Having met you once in SLO area at Edna Winery for a booksigning, I would bet you are an Autumn. Have fun!

  26. Patty says:

Oh My goodness! I am so happy that you are off to have some fun! You are so good to us, you need to enjoy your life so you can, again, pass that enjoyment on!
I am not fond of orange either, however, it has its place in quilting sometimes.

  27. Linda says:

Thank you for your charming blog, which feels like spending time with a close friend over tea! I love the s & p birds – so sweet. You are an inspiration!

  28. Susan says:

Hopefully your little birds will migrate south to our home. I promise to keep them safe from the cats!

  29. Linda says:

Thank you for your wonderful blog. Reading it is like spending time with a friend over tea. Love your s & p birds – so sweet. You are an inspiration!

  30. Jack says:

Of course you wear Orange — how else can you blend with your hot colored Leo, big bad Joe?
Also, commenting on the lady eating the rose — That’s Margot …..right ?

  31. Buzz'n Bea says:

Oh, it is so much fun to have your colors done. I am a summer. give me periwinkle blue, denim, dusty rose, grayed purples, and colors with blue undertones.
Some peoples coloring is such that they can wear almost any color, just use the make up colors that go with them.

Hope you had a wonderful relaxing day with friends, they are the best.

  32. Mia Sophia says:

Sounds like a glorious day to go out and play. Then enjoy a spot of tea with friends. Enjoy yourself and the color consultation! I am playing with my grandson…a 7month old full of wonder and delight!

  33. Holly says:

Sounds wonderful! I am in love with the sweet little birds, who will remind me of your cheerful little greeter~ welcoming us at the top of your blog 🙂

  34. nonnie says:

Love the color thing . .had mine done ages ago. Thought of you over the weekend when it snowed all day Saturday . . .spent the day catching up on “Dowton Abbey”. . .LOVE IT!!

  35. Barbara says:

I’ve never had my colors done. How does it work?

PS…two thumbs up on the hot milk cake. The men (surprisingly) loved it.

Have a great day off with your girlfriends.

  36. Carilyn Wolski says:

Hello Susan! Hope you had fun getting your colors done! I can’t wait to hear all about this event. I have never heard of this process…..do tell. I always learn something interesting from your blog!

  37. Lori C. says:

Life is like a box of … crayons! Whatever season you turn out to be you will always be our darlin’ Sweet Sue! I know you are having a wonderful time with your gal pals! And can’t wait to see what pictures and comments you have to say about that fun experience!

  38. Carolyn Maves says:

I have loved knowing my ‘color’, I am a winter. When over the years you buy clothes (either new or thrift store!) that are in your colors, you go home to your closet and you already have clothes that work with the new things. Especially fun is finding that your jewelry and scarves work with the new things.

I am taking to heart your stories about girlfriends, I am going to have a couple of girlfriend movie nights this winter. We have to do little things to beat the winter blues in the north woods of Wisconsin.

    Thanks and God bless.

  39. Nellie says:

I am a summer, too, Buzz’n Bee, although I was told that I can also “get away” with winter colors.:-)

Enjoy your day of play, Susan. We all need days like that!:-) It will be fun to hear if your season is the same. Regardless of the season, I think orange is a difficult color to wear well. That is unfortunate for many people in our “neck of the woods.” We are in “big orange country” because of the Tennessee Volunteers!

  40. Gloria Howard says:

Hope you have a wonderful day off today. Enjoy your girlfriends!
Thanks for making my day brighter every time I read your blog.

  41. Terri says:

Orange is a power color and it is also a healing color. It stimulates enthusiasm and creativity (you), and it means vitality and endurance. People who like orange are usually thoughtful and sincere. And it is said that Lady luck’s color is orange. I have liked orange for years now, and I was doing some research on colors, not what you are doing for fun but for those who like certain colors, personality, psyche, spiritual etc. so I educated myself that way! That doesn’t mean my house is filled with orange or that I wear a lot of it but I sure like pumpkins and things that are rust and orange colored and esp. FALL. LOL! Hope you had fun with your girlfriends! Smiles!!

  42. I didn’t know they still did that! I had that done back in the 80’s with a group of my friends. It was fun. I cannot for the life of me remember what ‘color’ I was then, but prefer browns now. Any shade. I suppose our best color choices change throughout the decades. As they should! Colors I am cool about changing, not so much sizes though 🙁

Still keeping my fingers crossed for the birds. You did get a lot of responses, so that is great!

  43. KathyG in WA says:

The ‘colors’ thing reinforced what I already knew, so nothing new was learned. But, at least I wasn’t wearing something horrid right?!?

I am excited about the birdie drawing. Can’t wait much longer! Thx for the fun blog!

  44. Lin says:

How fun! I remember those colors……..I’m the same as you, if I remember correctly. I agreed with most of the colors, especially that I shouldn’t wear black. So right – it drains me of color. The other main thing I remember is that spring/autumn people look good in creams, ivories, etc., while summer/winter people are better in true whites.

I hope you’ll share your experience here with us!

  45. Debbie says:

Funny Susan, I had my colors done years ago and they told me I could be either a spring or an autumn..they also said teal is a universal color that everyone can weat, so I have looked for teal ever since and wore a teal dress at my son’s wedding last year! But I LOVE autumn colors SO much and wear them a lot, on me and my house wears them too! LOL!
    Love your posts!

    • Janet says:

Hello, Debbie – bet you’re an Autumn then. I have my colors done years ago too and I remember the consultant saying many people are naturally drawn to the colors that suit them the best! :>)

  46. zinnia patch says:

Hi Susan! oh what fun! something i have always wanted to do! Can’t wait to hear all about it! I made the cake….served it with strawberries….delicious. Well, dinner time. Thanks again

  47. Alison Eisinger says:

    HI Susan,
Hope you have had a wonderful day today….nothing better that talking fashion color and having tea with a friend! Glad you had nice sunny day as well! I am enjoying all your posts about Girl Kitty and Jack. I am allergic to cats, but had one as a child. I miss all the fun they can be!! Have a super evening! I’ll bet Joe will be so interested to hear about your “color” experience!!

  48. florence rozler says:

Haveing a problem being able to enter birdie give away, any ideas?

  49. Ritchie Saunders says:

I posted yesterday but don’t see it! Anyway, I had ‘My Color’ done today.
At 75 I’m still not ready for ‘Mousy Grey’. Had my colors done about 30 years ago and still refer to the track it put me on…although red was one and I don’t like it on me. Like everything go with your own flow! Love the birdies so hope they find just the right home to be cherished and then passed on. XOXO

  50. JoAnn says:

    Hi Susan!
I would LOVE to have those little birdie salt & pepper shakers. I collect them!
    and I don’t have any birdie’s.
So please toss my name into the hat!
    Thanks
    JoAnn

  51. Lorie Hartsig says:

Hope you had a great day off….
How I would love those birdies on my table!
    Lorie H.

  52. pat addison says:

HELP!!!!!! it did it again, i posted twice this morning and it ate my posts!!!! 🙁

    • sbranch says:

I remember writing you back this morning, you mentioned it then! I have no idea what’s happening — but you aren’t the only one! Hope this goes through!

    • dottie says:

Pat — I’ve seen three posts — I think they are just lining up by time which doesn’t necessarily mean much when we come back to try to find it — it’s because other posts are waiting when we write ours and so there might be a dozen or two or three dozen others between what we see as the last post when we compose ours and our own once it has posted.

      • sbranch says:

Thank you for doing that explanation — one other thing, there are gremlins that live here, so things sometimes just seem to disappear or get rearranged. All part of the “fun!” 🙂

  53. Christl says:

Oh goodie! I have been waiting for having “your colors done” to make a come back. My mom had it done in the 80’s, and I must say she did look good in the hues that they said were her “colors,” and she was a “winter.” I missed the boat because I was a bit too young. Now I hope they bring it all back. They used to have big get togethers, and all the ladies would sit around a big table. The host would lay swatches of color around the person neck and chest and everyone would sort of say “yes,” or “no.” The pile of “yeses” would usually all fall under one season. They’d give your colors via something like paint chips…and there you were, your chance at being your most gorgeous self. Sounds like fun, and can’t wait to hear your story of it all Susan!

  54. Melody says:

Love your blog – love the birdies – hope they get to come & live at my house!

  55. Janet says:

Oh do your colors, Susan – it’s so much fun! I’m a Summer and luckily just LOVE all the colors in my season. Everyone in my [blood] family is a Winter or Summer -but my sister-in-law is a lucky Spring – another very pretty palette. I think it’s very useful for shopping and decorating etc – since IF you can keep to your colors, everything seems to go together so well.

But I must confess I would have thought it was a major gimmick – except for the fact that I first Phil Donahue do a show on this topic years ago. The expert did a model’s hair, makeup and wardrobe, brought her out and asked the audience “whaddaya think?” And the whole room thought she was lovely. And she was – she looked really nice. THEN they took her backstage and re-did her in her Season – brought her back out and did a split-screen comparison. The difference was just amazing! I couldn’t believe my eyes – she looked SO MUCH better in her colors!! Instead of noticing the individual parts – eyes, skin, hair, makeup, outfit – you really noticed the whole person. She actually looked healthier than in the original makeup etc. Made an immediate believer out of this skeptic. Went right out and bought the book, which I still have and use almost 30 years later. Have fun & be sure to tell us how things go.

    • Karen D says:

Wow – I am glad you posted that because I feel really skeptical about the whole thing. That would have been really convincing to me too.

  56. Mary Ann says:

Hmm, it may depend on who’s doing your colors and which company they represent. Years ago someone from Color Me Beautiful defined me as Autumn. A few years later, a different company rep said I was a spring. Either way, they are both Warm color palettes. Autumns should always color their hair until their natural hair is white. I now have grey hair (ugh) and have no idea when it will all turn white. I wear a lot of colors, but I get the most compliments with the autumn/warm color palette, even though my skin tone seems to have changed, too. Basically we can all wear the same colors, just a different tone or shade/hue of that color that compliments your skin tone. Um, can I please have the birds? Pleeeeeze?

  57. Ann says:

Hope you enjoyed your day off! We’re all waiting to hear what “color” you are (no orange this time, please?) Had mine done years ago- I’m a “winter”…. still assuming I’m a “winter” because I like the colors that go with it 🙂
Waiting to hear where the little birds will live chirp, chirp….

  58. Have a “happy” day today Susan! Nothing is more fun than getting to spend a day out in the company of good friends.

    Hugs XX
    Barbara

  59. Suzanne Brown says:

Your blog cheers me up on cold, snowy winter days. Also on hot summer days.

  60. Pat Mofjeld says:

It will be interesting to hear what they tell you. I’ve never “had my colors done” because I’m afraid they will tell me I should wear orange, lime, or, worse yet, purple! Those colors are fine on other people but not me! Plus I am independent enough to not want someone else to tell me what I “should” do! LOL 🙂 Incidentally, Susan, I LOVED the first paragraph of this posting–your logic sounds exactly the way my brain works. I was told once that my middle name should be “Polyanna” but face it, that kind of logic just plain makes sense! 🙂

  61. Chrissy Thrower says:

    Darling Sue Sue!
Oh, I just loved going around the island in the snow and returning to the fire with you and your Joe! I felt just there with you!
My Lee and I just came Tramping in from a jaunt to the Delicious Chinese Restaurant. We have freezing drizzle and light snow here. Slippity!
I sure hope your colors have been sufficiently decided. Those colors are noticed when people start complimenting your outfits and saying ‘how pretty you look today! I bet you start hearing that! Ha! Tah Tah for now! Chrissy

  62. Gert says:

Susan, Sure hope you had a marvelous day off and enjoyed your time with your friends. Would love to hear what they had to say about your colors.

Blessings and have a good evening!
    Gert

  63. Lucy F. says:

    Susan,

Thought of you today. There is a great article on B. Potter and Peter Rabbit in the latest issue of Country Gardens Mag.

Where does one get her “colors” done? Do tell the process!

    • DIANE PARRILLI says:

      DEAR SUE,

THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME ANOTHER CHANCE TO WIN. I LOVE YOUR BLOG, I LOVE THE BIRDIES! I AM A LONGTIME FAN.

      DIANE,XOXO

    • Laura says:

I watched Miss Potter again yesterday…I LOVE that movie and haven’t seen it in a while. I love the scene where Beatrix is a little girl and she looks out her nursery window as her parents are getting into their carriage and the carriage magically becomes a pumpkin and the horses big, fat bunnies….love, love love…..and when she and Norman dance while the music box plays……sigh. Someday I would love to visit Hill Top Farm….Susan, did you go there while in England?

  64. Deb Huch says:

I had my colors done about 20 years ago. I can’t wait to hear if it is life changing for you. Maybe I need to do mine again…..

  65. Juliana says:

Well, hope you had a great day – sounds like a lot of fun. So glad to hear you’re going out and enjoying yourself – you deserve it!!! You certainly make all of us happy!

  66. Teena says:

always love reading what you have to say! It’s a highlight of the day for me and very grateful that you take the time to do so…thank you!

  67. Audrey Patterson says:

Susan, I am so delighted to hear that you younger girls are having your colours done. I had mine done back in the 80’s and I was so taken that I went to Toronto and took the course. I did peoples colours for many years and discovered that I have a natural flare for it, which I believe to be really necessary along with the course. I ran into lots of people who had been wrongly done and it made me very sad. My motto was YOU MAY BE LOOKING GOOD WHEN YOU COULD BE LOOKING GREAT.
It was a wonderful experience to be able to show people how great they could look in their right colours, it just delighted my heart. It is a great idea to go with some friends as they should be able to see the truth in what the consultant is saying, if it is so.
Back then the fashion industry jumped on the band wagon and we could go into a clothing store and things would be arranged by proper seasons. This created a real problem for stores, as customers ( with their colour samples in their hands ) would turn down many things because they weren’t exactly the right colour. Imagine the clerk that has found the right, size, price and colour for a customer only to lose the sale due to a tiny shade difference.
75% of the population are Winters which is why the jewel colours were so popular back then or Summers which suit pastels best.
The fashion industry got back on all of us by switching to the warm shades,(that only suit a small portion of the population), then even worse, they dumped black into every colour going and grayed them all, so that they don’t do” anything” for “anyone”.
The real question is ( do you want to look pink or yellow, a no brainer ) and ( do you want the attention drawn to your face or maybe your feet)

If you want your wrinkles to stand out then wear beige or brown which is the colour of wrinkles. If you want to look mottley then wear mottley colours. If you want to look young then bring out the whites of your eyes (like a childs),by wearing white near your face. We all understand these things to do with decorating our homes but sometimes we need help to discover which colour sofa we are in order to decide which pillows will look best on us. Sorry for going on so long, you can see this is my passion.

    • sbranch says:

I can see that, and I now know why — what a difference it makes!

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

Yes, it’s so amazing, but it does make a difference! I recall the darling girl who “did” our colors, had practically no makeup on – she glowed & her eyes were so beautiful – she wore all the right colors next to her face! We were convinced! So Ms Autumn, have fun choosing some new cute clothes! xo

  68. suzy says:

thanks for the music, it is always fun to listen to.

  69. TeriGrace says:

Colors Done?!?!? Brings back memories. My Mom, Winter, had her’s done years ago… like in the 80s. It was wonderful for her. So…. she had us all done. Sis was Summer, fit her to a tea. Sis-in-law was Spring, she soooo didn’t like it or the assessment of her personality. But it was right on. Dad, Brother and I were all Autumn. I. Did. Not. Want. to be Autumn. But many years later….. it fits. I am in love with the color brown…. all shades. Though have never been overly fond of orange…. it’s for sunsets and construction zones. Can’t wait to hear how it went for you all!

  70. clare says:

    Dear Susan,
Your pictures of your Vineyard neighborhood are just beautiful! Sure looks pretty in the snow –and Christmasy, too. love the birdies.

  71. Joanie B says:

Knowing which colors look the best prevents stupid purchases, I can testify to that!
Unfortunately the fashion designer divas control which colors are in. I think I heard that this spring it is all about pale pastels which is deathly on a winter like me. Having all one season in your closet helps when you purchase and when you put an outfit together. I have been pleasantly surprised after making a purchase that it goes with a lot in my wardrobe. When I know that I look great, I can forget all about me and concentrate on encouraging and complimenting my friends. Hope I win the birdies, but just love reading your blogs and is a prize enough for me!

  72. Jerri Ellen says:

Bye Bye Birdies….please fly to my home!

  73. Hi Susan, had my colors done many years, I am an autumn/winter, which makes since, I always loved fall colors anyway! Hope you had fun!
    xoxoxo
Showed my Husband the birds, he loves them!

I am new to your blog and I love it. Glad I didn’t miss out on the birds!

  75. Sarah Maldonado says:

I was so glad to see that someone else on here had the same first idea about “getting your colors done” and thought you were all going to get your hair done. I’ve tried not to color my hair because I know once I start I’ll never get to stop…I pretend that my grays are just highlights. ha ha. As I kept reading, I realized what you meant and felt so embarassed to think you needed to get your “colors done” the way i thought! LOL.

  76. Arlinda says:

    Hi Susan,

I love the drawing of the woman in your blog, is that your friend?

    • sbranch says:

It’s the spirit of my girlfriend Margot (and probably a little of me and you in there too), but not really her!

  77. Mary Duke says:

Didn’t have my colors done, but did enjoy a pedicure with my daughter – I chose a gorgeous bronze color. Suited me today!

  78. Sandy Artman says:

    Hi Susan,
Hope your experience with the “colors” was fun. Any surprising outcome? I am a ‘summer’ and was sure I couldn’t wear anything that was remotely connected to orange and yellow UNTIL I had my ‘colors done’. Surprise! I found out that pale yellow and peach colors looked as good on me as pink, one of my favorites. It would be interesting to do it again, all these years later, since aging I’m sure has changed the ‘canvas’. ;->)
    Blessings!

  79. Suzanne says:

    My hands are clapping….

  80. Holly says:

    Have fun with the girls!

  81. Laurie W.-MA says:

I remember “getting my colors done” many years ago and same thing–was a spring or autumn. Could never see myself in orange, but found a pretty “apricot” sweater last year and have lived in it. (However, got married in Oct., 1975 and put my bridesmaids in an orange “qiana fabric” dress with a jacket that came with a “hood”–it was the 70’s–didn’t want my bridesmaids wearing a hat which was the fashion. Unfortunately, I had already picked it out just before Squeaky Fromme and President Ford that Sept. Oh well, still happily married after all these years!)
Hope you had a great day!

  82. Marian says:

Hope you had a great day getting your colors done. I had mine done 30 years ago, with a girlfriend. It was a lot of fun.

  83. Lisa R says:

Susan, I hope you day was filled with lots of silliness, gab sessions, hearty laughter, and all the joy you give us here everyday!

  84. Terry says:

I have never left a comment before, but I love reading them and thought I would join in the fun. I had my colors done years ago and had a great time. I am a “winter” and find that the colors in that “season” really do suit me best.
    Take care.

    • sbranch says:

I love the colors for a winter!! But you can’t be what you aren’t — that’s what I now know to be true!

  85. I think it’ll be super fun to have your colors done. Years ago, a lovely Merle Norman consultant, did my colors, before we picked out make-up. It was so much FUN…and I learned about the colros that flatter my skin tone the best. It’s amazing 😉 🙂 Enjoy, enjoy 🙂 🙂 Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather 🙂

  86. Tracey says:

    Susan,

I would love the recipe for the onion pudding and a retrospective on
Jack and Girl Kitty, and a walk in the cemetary. I enjoyed the snow
pictures. I love your blog. Thank you.

  87. Carolyn Taylor says:

Susan, What magical place you live at. My heart swelled with joy seeing such beauty in snow, in such a faraway place. I live in southern California, as you know winter isn’t quite as wonderful! Thanks for taking me there!

    Carolyn

  88. Marie says:

I’m a cross between a blue and a white. I think that’s a good thing personally. 🙂 Hope you had a swell time with your girls. A day spent in the company of good friends doing “girlie” things is a pretty wonderful thing and a gift we all owe to ourselves now and again! xxoo

  89. Sandie says:

Please count me in for the birdie shakers…. soooo adorable!
I’m an autumn, and love the colors, but sometimes I really like wearing black 😉

  90. Linda says:

Your winter pictures are great. Thank you for showing the ferry. There aren’t any ferries in Oklahoma. Your green birds are so cute. I have never seen a live green bird, but yours are special. I have never replied to a blog before. Hope I am doing it right. Have a fun day.

  91. Janie O says:

    Sweet Sue,

you have a wonderfully creative personal style. I love the ideas you gave us in the Girlfriends book. My favorite was tying a scarf or a ribbon on your wrist, such a fun accessory! Girlfriend time is always so much fun!!

I could not find my previous entry for the tweet birdies…so please enter me in! They would be happy nesting with my vintage ceramic collection of birdies and the sweetest birdhouse planter!!

The watercolor of your red headed girlfriend is one of my most favorite! And I especially love the one of the 3 girlfriends walking away! XOXO

  92. Victoria says:

There is always something wonderful about a day out with girlfriends and laughter and when that’s not possible, being here with all of you gives me the same happy feelings. You just never know where the conversation wilI go, I learn so much from all of you. Reading your thoughts gives me so much joy! Thank you Susan and girlfriends!
No matter how satisfying work is, it’s always good to get away from it for a little while so we can come back refreshed,. Girlfriends have a special way of giving us a fresh outlook.
Susan, loved the milk cake! ….and loved your beautiful pictures of your home in the snow.
I have to tell you, last year before your blog, I just couldn’t help but play your video over and over of the dog on your porch on that gray snowy day…..so simple and so beautiful!…one of my all time favorite videos of yours. It gave me all those homey cozy feelings of my childhood. Thank you!
…Now, just would love it to snow some more!
    Love to you all!
    Victoria

  93. Doreen Strain says:

Hope you had a great time with your girlfriends Susan. So what colors turned out to be yours? I personally wear what ever I feel like wearing. I love all colors and wear whatever my mood is. Bright colors when I’m feeling happy and joyous and darker colors when I’m in a more serious mood. I wear red when I need to remember my strength and mean business and black when I’m felling classy. I guess I’m like a color wheel. Never really found a color I didn’t like to wear. Hope tea was fun and you did a lot of giggling. FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  94. Lynn McMahon says:

    HI~
For anyone who wants to know what color you are UTUBE has many videos. If you put in “Color or Colour Me Beautiful” episode 1 it shows how it is done!
    Good Luck~
    Lynn

  95. Kirsten Wichert says:

It doesn’t surprise me at all that you’re an autumn. But don’t buy into not being able to wear black, etc. I’m a summer but there is a shade of almost every color for each seasonal pallette. What’s most important is the color around your face. When I wear black such as a jacket or dress, I add a pretty colored scarf. It makes all the difference. Make up shades are important, especially lipstick. There is a red for every season. Winters are more blue/red. Summers a lighter pink/red. Autumns are more orange/red. Springs are more peachy/red. Summer and Winter are cool shades. Spring and Autumn are warm shades. I’m sure you know all of this being an artist. There is a good book that covers all of this called Color Me Beautiful.

I’m sure you had a great time with your friends! It’s so much fun doing things
    together!

  96. So glad the drawing’s still on. Maybe I have a chance, although I don’t know what the original theme was. Our weather has cleared out as well. After a week without power, we are grateful to be able to get out and about. Many of the old-growth oak trees that abound in this area have fallen to the slaughter from our recent ice storm. So sad….

  97. Lorie Hartsig says:

    Good morning!
Thank you for coming back to us!
Rainy here, and still no snow this winter here on our beach. 🙁
    Have a happy day……
    Lorie H.

  98. Georgie says:

So glad you had a fun day!!! Years ago I was a SPRING!!! I’m wondering if the years have changed my color palate! It would be fun to do this again!!!

It’s raining here in NJ today. Now that we had our snow (althought not for Christmas…) I am looking to Spring…

  99. Lynn McMahon says:

    Hi again~
While drinking my tea and net surfing I found http://www.prettyyourworld.com/colortheory.html
which goes deeper into “the 12 seasons”~not just the original 4 because some seasons blend together.
Guess what I will be doing today!~

  100. Lauren says:

When Color Me Beautiful first came out, someone gave my Grandmother a copy as a gift. Of course, she was an autumn and was already wearing autumn colors, so she didn’t even need it! I, however, was obsessed with it and would get it out and color analyze anyone and everyone. I probably even color analyzed April (the Collie)! Now I’ll have to see if I can find a copy–I’m pretty sure I’m “summer,” but haven’t been to a professional.
